Virgin Blue - Acknowledement to Country PA

On board this week i noticed that VB has a new PA which they are saying just prior to landing, which is an Acknowledment to Country .

It goes something along the lines of

"Ladies and Gentleman, we will shortly be landing in Brisbane. Virgin Blue would like to acknowledge the Spirit Ancestors and Traditional owners of the land we now know as Brisbane"

It took me by surprise a bit, considering only 2 days earlier there had been the recognition from governent in regards to the stolen generation. SO it made me think that VB were jumping on the bandwagon


On disembarking I had a quick chat to a crew member and they said it was a new permanent pa and had just been begin this week and they had to say it on every landing, and that many cabin supervisors did not feel comfortable saying the pa as some passengers didnt think it was appropiate.

Anybody else heard this pa yet?

Interesting - I am guessing band wagoning which I think devalues the message. I also don't think it's appropriate - it would be about as relevant as acknowledging the Queen at the end of each flight.

I already get peeved at the number of usually inane PA announcements that cut into the AV programming :evil: , so I hope QF don't feel obliged to follow suit and introduce this.

I understand the need to recognise people however why can't we all be equal and treated as such?????

Sounds like a bit of a stunt on VB's behalf. Why wait till now??????

Someting to look forward to NOT. VB lets hope you recognise the need not to keep the PA ongoing.

I travelled on DJ last weekend and didnt hear an acknowledgement to country.

It is odd that DJ think it's appropriate to do this on their flights.

Personally, i think that these acknowledgements serve the opposite purpose to what they are intended to when they are just part of protocol and aren't genuine, and become more a show of contempt then a show of respect.

Just my mini-rant.

acampbell - is there something we missed about that day's flight and the significance of the arrival in BNE? I will admit my knowledge of indigenous affairs is pretty limited but I see no reason for this particular gesture. Especially as BNE is not an area that has a recorded group of traditional land owners based on the limited research I was able to do on the Native Title database and map.

I think paying homage to the spirit of our land, is becoming a very Australian thing to do (...once again, after a break of just a few hundred years) - when we arrive somewhere/@ a gathering.

Better than poking out our tongues p in my opinion). It's something specific, unique and spiritual that makes us think, if only for a second, about "our place" - not just location & relationships, but also in time... (Perhaps one reason it is such an ancient Australian tradition?)

I have been told that it should be happening prior to landing in all destinations below - ( i got a copy of the pa's today)

Melbourne - "Ladies and Gentleman, we will shortly be landing in Melbourne. Virgin Blue would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri People who are the Traditional custodians of this land. We would like to pay respect to the elders both past and present of the Kulin Nation."

Sydney - "Ladies and Gentleman, we will shortly be landing in Sydney. Virgin Blue would like to acknowledge the Eora of the Dharug Nation who are the Traditional custodians of this land. We would like to pay respect to the elders both past and present of the Dharug Nation."

Canberra - "Ladies and Gentleman, we will shortly be landing in Canberra. Virgin Blue would like to acknowledge the Ngunnawai People who are the Traditional custodians of this land. We would like to pay respect to the Ngunnawai elders both past and present."
