Can anyone explain why the first 10 or so rows in Y are shown as unavailable when I try to choose a seat. I have been seated up front upon request at check in, however. Possibly they are trying to fill the plane from the back like a bus or something. It's on a flight to Hobart and return. It is a free Amex flight, but I don't think that has anything to do with it.

The first 10 or so rows are reserved for Gold and Platinum Frequent Flyers until shortly before take off.

Thank you for the info. I half expected something like that. I usually flash my Red FF card. Flights to Hobart on a Saturday or Sunday In January are not usually full of higher status flyers, I guess.

You should be able to choose a better seat at the front of the plane if they haven't already been taken by Gold & Platinum members when online check-in opens.

Surely one wouldn't redeem one of these flights for a MEL-HBA flight which can be snapped up very cheaply on a revenue ticket I believe (could be LST i am thinking of)?
