Virgin - iPad pro told to stowe before takeoff

Hi, I am just wondering if an iPad Pro with no keyboard needs to be stowed before takeoff? I was requested to stowe as a large device, first time it’s happened on any airline. I didn’t bother arguing however looks correct.

On this Virgin webpage Use of electronics onboard the flight | Virgin Australia
it says:
“PEDs less than 1 kg which can be held in one hand with their largest dimension no greater than 25 cm”

This could be the reason , however any iPad doesn't classify to be a hand held device and hence might need to be stowed away.
 
I've always been ok to hold my iPad Air, and no issues with my new Samsung tab.
 
I’ve been told on almost every flight I have taken on VA to take my iPad Pro out of its keyboard case, but no questions once its “in my hands”. Certainly resting it on my lap while sorting out other things has felt far more precarious without the case (and not something that has brought attention)!

I would have thought you would need to 'stow a Pro'. I certainly can't hold mine with a keyboard. I don't travel with mine, so defer to more knowledgeable folk.
 
I've been told to stow a 9.7" ipad (not on VA, I think it was JQ).

Some crew just get it wrong. I didn't argue beyond the initial challenge.
 
Just had 4 flts in J with an iPad 9.7 on VA - listened to music thru most of those flts incl takeoff (excl safety..) and landing and Never given a look or a request by crew. Kept it tucked alongside the armrest.
 
About 15 flights this year with the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, in my lap, yes it's large

Was told to store it once and I appreciate it's larger than "allowed" but if a crash/evacuation happens it's going to be the least of anyone's worries
 
To be honest (and I really don't have a horse in the race because I don't even own a tablet) having watched practically every episode of air crash investigations, seconds to disaster etc etc ever produced I don't recall the size of a passengers tablet ever taking as active a role as terrain, pitot tube covers and hydraulic systems but it is what it is.

I'd be more worried about the houses people pack into hard cases and carry on these days busting through the overhead locker doors and taking me out but it seems those are ok.

What I do think is interesting is Scoot requiring no headphones for takeoff and landing since everyone is on their personal devices these days and probably wouldn't even hear a cabin announcement. That really seems like an effective safety control, passengers hate it though (never seen so many arguments between pax and crew as over this directive) yet we are busting out the tape measure for specific models of tablet 🤷‍♂️
 
Why don't you tell casa that. They're the ones who make the rules.
I mean, the fact it is a government bureaucracy does explain a lot, but I think it is fair to question efficacy sometimes. The whole idea that a bunch of government employees are the sole authority and we are just along for the ride isn't unique to us here in Australia, but some things might seem a bit questionable, like the fundamental difference between an 11" and 12" tablet hurtling through the cabin, because to me it does seem very arbitrary but perhaps that's what it is, an arbitrary point at which CASA believes a tablet tends towards being a laptop?

Anything larger than the safety card is deemed too large for take off and landing and is not a handheld device and will have to go away.

Some crew enforce it, some don't. You might get told to put it away and some don't care. Don't get too frustrated when you have crew who are adamant that you do :)
 
Easy enough to hide tablet to the side/seat pocket for the final cabin walkthrough, then back out as soon as crew are seated

Except when in Row 1 C/D/E, or Row 2 C/D
