Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

Not a bad offer at the moment, does anyone know if ato spend qualifies for minimum spend, I would think it would, I just won't receive any points for it, but for making the spend it should be fine? However if not I'll prepay some strata, council rates, and other bills.
Usually if you don't earn points on a charge, then its not a eligible spend.

thanks for the quick reply, I had a look in the T&Cs and your right it is not an eligible spend, looks like it's going to get harder as many credit cards do not reward for ato spend anymore.

Never had a month to month spend hit before. Anyone know exactly how it works?

Is it statements or actual months?

statement month. And it begins from the approval date, so I found I lost a few days in the first month waiting for the card to arrive. I've just finished 4 months (4 x 10,000 bonus from the previous offer) on the flyer and had to pay close attention to ensure spend hit the right period. Good news was the points arrived promptly each time the statement was issued.

Given you've used an offer like this before - is it simple to track what has been counted as eligible spend throughout the month?

I'm assuming that the points accrued are visible on the my.virginmoney site before they are transferred to Velocity at the end of the statement month and the aim (this time) is just to get that number to 3000.

i don't think my offer had quite the same restrictions on eligible spend- I know I just tracked dollars and that got me across the line each month.

Just had a quick look at the website- and I can see the current points balance (but mine is at 1, so it must carry over what it can't transfer?) but I can't see points per transaction.

IIRC there was also often a lag time of spend hitting the online balance (a few days only, but critical towards EOM!) so I also watched the balance outstanding. The min spend across 4 x months is waaaaaaay more admin, but worth it: particularly with this offer!

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

has anyone bought a westfield eftpos card and been credited the points?

am assuming it would not be one of the categories that don't earn points.

Thinking a $995 card for $5 fee would be a simple way to ensure making the monthly spend. i'd usually pay rates / water etc a bit early but can't with this card. eftpos card will work out not too bad.

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

I'm hoping Westfield xs cards work on this card.. makes it a no brainer

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

This offer looks pretty good to me, however judging by the responses, most seem to be going the High Flyer compared to the Money Flyer. My brief comparison comes down to this:
  • Both offer pretty coughpy earning rates, so that is not an attraction to the offer.
  • Both offer $129 flight voucher, so no differentiation there.
  • HF offers 2 Virgin lounge passes and MF none. To me (and most others I'm guessing) this is of little or no value.
  • HF offers 120k points whilst MF offers 60k points.
  • HF has a fee of $289 whilst MF has a fee of $64.

So it comes down to this, taking aside the $129 voucher, for the MF, you are effectively buying 60k Virgin points for $64 (937.5 points per dollar). For HF, you are buying 120k points for 289 (415.2 points per dollar).

Therefore that leads me to concluding that to go with the High Flyer, the motivation must clearly be that they want as many points as possible and see 415.2 per dollar very good value (fair assumption). Another way of looking at it is they could have 60k @ $64 and the next 60k @ (289-64)=$225 which for that segment is 266.6 points per dollar for the additional 60k points - which once again must be perceived as good value.

I personally think MF where you are already in front with the flight voucher and better point cost is the sweet spot and will likely get this card.

Is there any flaw in the analysis above?

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

Is there any flaw in the analysis above?

It comes down to how you value points, and how much you want to spend upfront on cards fees on the basis you're going to extract more value than the card fee later on. Eg. If best laid plans to use for premium cabin flights/upgrades dont come off and you want to 'cash in' the points as your exiting the game - what can you get for the extra 60k points that you spent another $225 acquiring? Can you 'cash in' for vouchers for say, groceries, to get back that $225? I dont know, but my guess is you probably could. That way your at a cost neutral, or even slightly ahead at worst.

So using that logic, in my mind the 120k is a no brainer provided I can meet the minimum spend per month as even though I'm outlaying more cash in card fees, I know that I can recoup this with a reasonable degree of certainty if my plans change and I'm not using the points for flying.

Different strokes, different folks though. A mate of mine refuses to pay an annual fee to obtain a card bonus, which I think is crazy given you can spend a little bit on card fees, but he doesnt fly often and is determined to fly up the front for only the cost of the taxes on the flight.

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

Interesting thoughts GSP, and indeed I followed your logic on the Westpac card as I needed fewer QF points.

Here though, I'll be applying for the high flyer because most VA & Co offers sit closer to 40k-60k points, so this is a huge boost for only one hit to my credit report. Also, given Virgin have significantly changed the spend terms this offer, I suspect the next change will be a 12 month exclusion and this will be another card on my 'waiting list'. The 3 x $3000 (given the limitations) will be a challenge if it weren't for Christmas & our home insurance falling due!

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

Thanks for the number GSP, always good to be aware of what you're getting.

For me, it was about getting a big whack of velocity points in a hurry. I currently hold an AMEX and have already churned and burned NAB and ANZ velocity earning cards this year so couldn't see many other ways to significantly increase my total in the short term, building towards some long haul redemptions next year. So High Flyer it was then.

However, if you include the voucher, the Flyer card effectively pays you to take it out and dumps 60k points in your lap. It is definitely a great option in it's own right!

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

I have been closely looking at the High flyer now as an alternative card for where Amex isn't accepted. Seeing as you get 1 point / Dollar i actually think that's a pretty competitive rate (unless i read it wrong). For me the issue is the $3000 / mth spend which largely means missing out on Amex purchases where 3 points can be earned. So i may lose 18000 points using the Visa when not really needed.
My current ANZ card has paid points so no need to use it anymore and my Westpac Black doesn't offer good rates on the MC anyway. I am still out with the jury.

Nice analysis, but it's not always just about the numbers. For me I alway try to get the most points per credit card churn as I am limited to how many I can do in a year, since my score takes a while to recover, also in this instance I had to go for the MF as the minimum annual earnings requirements left the HF out of my reach.

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

I already have the HF any chance I can apply for the MF and get the points?? or am I dreaming

Re: Virgin Money Flyer 60,000/High Flyer 120,000, $129 flight voucher, annual fee $64

I applied for the 60k bonus one a week ago, uploaded docs

didnt hear back and others are getting approval within a few days

I just got a msg from citi group saying "once you recieve your card ending in 1111 activate it by calling bla bla"
