Virgin to remove bagfree fares from Domestic Routes

Perhaps the airlines need to make the carry on a reasonable figure (10kg in a single case with one additional laptop would seem fair) and then police it to the max.....especially the size. let's face it, we all know the size requirements and luggage manufacturers build to suit the most common requirements so it's not hard. People who bring on half the house do need to be stopped and have their luggage checked (and issued a bill for it).
 
And don't get me started on weighing the bloody bag, in terms of space - it's about volume only, and how many bags can physically fit into the lockers. Whether the identical 115cm bag weighs 7kg or 15kg, it takes up the same amount of overhead space!

An example of this is the US carriers as well as BA... they allow 1 main piece up to 23kg. It only has to meet the size requirements otherwise.
 
Just to add another data point to this conversation, I have had my roller bag checked in at the gate twice travelling with Virgin Australia in the past year. Once when it was too heavy and again when one gate agent said it was a super full flight and as I was one of the last to board I would struggle to find space. I should note that my roller bag is within the specified dimensions. On both occasions I complied without complaint my ticket included checked in luggage.

JQ recently reduced theirs from 10kg to 7kg.
 
I think the point needing to be made is that the 7kg limitation on a single piece was originally determined as likely to cause serious injury should it fall on someone, but unlikely to cause death. I had this explained to me by a CASA rep travelling next to me well over 2 years ago. He said that as a regulator they were not concerned with physical dimensions, that is set by the carrier according to their overhead locker dimensions divided by the number of Pax. I assume it would be averaged over the entire fleet.

I'm not sure that what JQ does is really relevant. QF are also 7kg, but I simply made a suggestion. I don't for one minute think anyone at VA will say "hey, swanning_it had an idea that might work"!

I have heard the terms 'swanning_it' is often repeated on the upper level of the VA Bowen Hill's H.Q. so don't you go under-estimating yourself like that again ..... OK.
 
I also think the 7kg limit is silly - a stowed rollerboard is very unlikely to fall out given dimensions, whereas a 10kg handbag...

Given most rollerboards weigh 3-4kg and laptops plus power 2-3kg (some exceptions for both I know), 7kg is way on the light side
 
Sorry if I missed this point as I scanned 9 pages of information and missed some stuff. But since Virgin now owns Tiger, maybe they are going to a model like QANTAS and JetStar. In essence, FCC Virgin=QANTAS and with LCC Tiger=JetStar.

JB has stated the VA and TT relationship will not become like the QF and JQ relationship. VA-FCC and TT-LCC though are definite (even although VA may use a different definition of FCC than some of us may be hoping.....or expecting).
 
Time flys. Changes go through tonight. I'm not holding my breath they will reduce any bag incl. levels even by $1.also watching for another push at Flexi levels as part of the enhancement.Its clear the pricing power is back with the duopoly.

I'd got the dates mixed up so didn't think it was happening so soon.

Anyway checked airfares earlier and saw both Saver Lite and Saver. I was specifically checking BNE-SYD return and OOL-SYD return on sale for June 2015. I just checked again now and the Saver Lite fares are gone but the Saver fare is the price as the old Saver Lite.
 
Sorry I should check myself I know, but just to clarify, Savers are at Saver Lite prices now? And Flex have been raised again?
 
Example(based on my recent bookings) SYDMEL bag free was $129 and Saver entry $145 with flex $339 ,now entry Saver $149 and flex $355, but as John noted ,no change on OOL from saver flex combo the other half used last month. Seems a leisure/business approach (other than consistant removal of the bag fare)
 
On my usual route flexi might have increased by as much as $50. Now $300 with discount, I think it used to be around $250 or $265
 
So the entry price on MEL-SYD is now $149 on VA compared to the previous bag-free price of $129 :-/

This is only $6 cheaper than Qantas! And Qantas has at least 2 things in their favour now the prices are about equal - better food/drinks in both the Lounges and on the Flight.

I'm sorry VA but your prices don't reflect your service just yet :-/

Edit: Prices also up on MEL-NTL which is on of my regular routes but no food service on this route yet :!:
