Virgins Pie In the Sky suggestions (new menu coming)

Maybe we should flog the sandwich maker from the Lounge and plug it into the galley somewhere.

A toasted sanga on board would be outstanding.

Its funny you should mention that, it was on my mind as well, mmmm hot breakfast. Sadly I doubt it will happen, too many safety issues with such a direct heat source and fire risk.

Another reason why we need power points onboard!!

OT:

A friend and I were coming back from MNL, where he did the typical markets and bought a large amount of junk. He purchased a small USB tranquility water fountain.... Very empty flight home, so he brought it out and set it all up on the tray table.

The look on the SQ flight attendant was priceless!

QF had ham and cheese brioches a couple of years back.. Prefer them to cereal!

Hearing you on the pre-mixers, and that will be communicated to the team.

Can I just ask, that the new aircraft, new cabins, new lounges, new routes, new alliances, new fare structure, new priority systems, etc has all been undone by the removal from the menu of the spirits and mixers, soup, hot chocolate, and a reduction in the numbers of different cookies and snacks?

This is a menu tweak so as to allow us to provide 'more of less' - a smaller menu so as to allow a greater number of guests the more popular items. Certainly not intended as an insult as you say.

I think it is more because of those things we have high expectations of Virgin, which really is a good thing.

Anyway what do people think of fresh pre-made gourmet pizza cooked onboard?

It's a bit of a let down... but on the food side, I'm not too upset. On my recent PE trips, I've sampled the Noodle Salad (bland, boring and left about 3/4 of it), both the paninis (best of the lot, however very dry and didn't seem to travel well) and something else that I've forgotten... but I can't say I'll miss them. If the sandwhich is a decent one, then I think it's a better option.

It will be a shame to say goodbye to the gin/vodka + tonic that I was enjoying so much. That said, though, for those down the back then $10 pricetag was a little steep. Pure Blonde is the only domestic beer I'll drink, so no complaints here

I think, well I hope, that the long term plan for Virgin is to go proper full service. It'd be interesting to know how much money the Menu is actually bringing in now. To switch to a Qantas style "time of the day" inclusive option could well be a cost effective option for them. In terms of simplicity, it could end up being a long-term saving.

Not too sure if was mentioned previously but the main issue I have is the time it takes to be served. Almost in decent if you’re unlucky to be half way back in the plane before they get to you.
Benefits of Qantas, no choice get what you’re given and load up on the alcohol at no charge. Love Virgin but will only fly Qantas Perth to Melb return for this reason

That's fair enough, it's a long trip - I would want a meal and a drink as well!

It seams to be the way Virgin is moving, hopefuly this is the case...

No, clearly it hasn't all been undone "by the removal from the menu of the spirits and mixers, soup, hot chocolate, and a reduction in the numbers of different cookies and snacks" - that would be a huge exaggeration. It's just all been undone by the removal of the spirits and mixers.

In all seriousness, if i cant get a scotch - or a G&T - on the flight can we get them in the lounge? :)

Now there's a question that I want an answer in the affirmative for!

And please, none of that Gordons or Beefeater rubbish. Tanqueray or Plymouth would be far more acceptable! :D

I think Virgin is missing the point with their food service.
I will speak for myself but I am sure other people would share my views.

Short flight Evening/Afternoon
After a long day and its late afternoon or evening, I want to relax and have a choice of drink. Beer Wine or sprit.
Depending on time a meal decent enough to see me through, sandwich is sufficient or snack, chips or crackers.

Short Flight, Morning
Decent coffee and something to eat (I see Virgin has also removed the cappuccino. Don’t need bacon and eggs just maybe some fruit or the muffins like you used to have would be fine.

Longer flights. 2 hours Plus.
All of the above plus the extras Virgin is suggesting. In other words a bigger selection with variety and option of Hot Food.

I presume the changes are being made because it isn’t working?
It isn’t working because you have gone back from where you started and the reason why you were charging for food.
As I understand it Virgin wanted to offer something different from Qantas, Choice!!! Virgin also said we will charge you less to fly as we won’t include extras like food but if you want it we will provide, but it will cost you.
Now I get on a flight and if I want something I have to wait 20 plus munities and there is no basic choices, I don’t really care who cooked or designed the meals. Simplicity and selection is the Key.
Maybe a suggestion. Longer flights 4 hours plus. Do as Qantas does and give all a pre determined meal and Alcohol. That would win me back.
Why would I fly with Virgin when I have to pay for everything, there no movie to watch because most of the TVs have been removed, buy for a block of cheese and pay for drinks. That there is the difference in costs between the Airlines.

Thanks Danny

Just sampled the "new" menu...

No decent beer
No decent wine
No spirits
Poor food!

Not good virgin not good. My velocity gold may be replaced by qf soon!

That will take some work to get there from scratch!

I agree menu is ****e, but think back to the QF box of a few years ago, and the flexi meal is not that bad usually. I think premium is the one that gets a hiding from this, because you get a pick of the menu for free. Thats a good cost saving for VA, when there is sweet FA on the menu to give you LOL. Seriously though, have the Sandwich, its good, and always ask if they have Pies on board, because quite often they do. even on the shorter flights.
Due to my travel this week, I have done a few QF sectors this week, and in all honesty the catering difference is minimal between a virgin flexi and QF Y. Horses for courses.

No matter how many others I try, I really can't be swayed from a Bombay & Schweppes Indian tonic.

Last three flights this week the topic has been the menu, and a lot of unhappy customers, it really is bad for early mornings! I had to dash to the lounge and grab a toastie. The press looks well used!

More of less.

Yes we have made changes to our menu as noted by many of you.

We've reviewed which menu items were most popular. So with that in mind, we have removed certain products that weren't selling, or required additional handling time such as mixing spirits and the hot chocolate. Changes due to space have also been made eg. the large ginger beer bottle, to a slim line can. Ditto Crown Lager tall bottle, to the Pure Blonde can.

We value everyone's opinions, as you are all entitled to them, so rest assured you have been heard.

We just ask for a little leeway as we tweak to get things right.

Thanks

(For the record, the DJ AFF official company rep isn't a fan of mushrooms either.)

Boy VA have dropped the ball on this one.

It seems to me they just dont quite get the importance of a cup of soup. I can only assume each of us in this forum fly a lot and love doing so, But we all reach that point of becomming sick and tired of hotel rooms, lounges and hurtling through the atmosphere in an aluminium tube. It gets to all of us at times.(VA just ask your cabin crew)

What often makes these things bearable is that little bit of Virgin flair, a smile, a conversation at a check in desk or someone going the extra mile.

Inflight food is not about getting loaded or experiencing fine dining. Irrespective of the class or status of the flyer. It is about the value experienced by enjoying a little piece of comfort from home. We are so often creatures of habit and routine.

Whether the flyers regular routine includes a hot chocolate before sleep, a beer before dinner or a ham and cheese sanger between meetings is neither or there. We find a tremendous amout of utility and comfort in the little things which link us back to where we would often rather be.(At Home).

To VA

If this is about about saving work or an additional dollar or two per sector its not worth it. Add the total to my fare, heck I'll even pay for the person next to me.

Reducing range like you have and in particular making the market for the food smaller by adding ingredients like mushroom, sundried tomato reduces the likelihood of passengers finding that little piece of comfort. A piece of comfort I for one would would trade many of your recent improvements for.

VA through your outstanding service over many years you find your brand in an enviable position where brand advocates spend our time commenting and adding suggestions in forums like this. Changes to your menu are not exactly top secret material. If you are ever in need of advice and input Just Ask!

There is a whole forum of fans just dying to help.

I was thinking about this today, remember all the commentary around DJ perhaps launching a LCC and DJ (can't remember if if was BG or JB) said that an option was rather than launch a new brand they'd cater for the LCC market within their mainline configuration....

Maybe this is the start of this coming to life...? Making the base menu like a 711/cinema which it now is - then making business catering SPECTACULAR and later suprising corporates and flex all in tix with another more up market menu.....???
