I think holding points with BOTH Qantas and Velocity is the sweet spot.

As a recent example, we managed to score J class reward seats to Singapore and back just a few days before Christmas- out on SQ via Velocity on the 23rd and back on BA via Qantas on 3rd Jan. A few days in SIN and then redeemed further QF points to get to Thailand on MH. Stayed at the gorgeous new Andaz in Pattaya using our last Hyatt Globalist Suite certificate for the year.

Was a truly lovely (albeit unexpected) escape from all the Christmas madness here and we paid maybe $1000 bucks total for a 5 Star holiday over Christmas and NY.
Andaz Pattaya in my opinion is the best hotel breakfast I've ever had!

so another red tail sale has dropped and J fares are down a further $10 or so...

Methinks the WFH APS will definitely make a significant impact on J fare flyers...
And today the North American Red Tail sale has dropped
Vancouver from $6499

Melbourne is nicer than Sydney so they have to tempt people to leave with lower fares.
ex SYD is also $5999. It’s the same promo fare now for about 4 sales. I bought at that price last year for travel last Aug/Sep.

So long as you fly into YVR, you can open jaw out of YYZ, YUL etc for about $6,500 with interesting options home ie 2 to 3 sectors on AA/QF with QF codes.

That’s what I thought

Or you could train across Canada

With the tax bit payable on top of that.
The questions is will they back out the taxes for the 1c/point calculation.

Will a $1000 fare costing $870 + $130 in taxes be 100,000 pts + $130 or will it be 87,000 pts + $130?

I had wondered that myself but I assumed that @levelnine had bottomed that out to make a definitive assertion that they are excluded from the calculation.

The latter. You can see how it is likely going to work here: "... we'll shortly announce a major investment to improve our Frequent Flyer program"
