"... we'll shortly announce a major investment to improve our Frequent Flyer program"

QFF must have done modelling on different scenarios and business risks involved. This would include also the scenario that a large part of currently engaged members and/or semi-active public find the program too costly or slow compared to benefits received and start disengaging. This could be from higher cost of points or lower earning rates, or the low availability or high cost of rewards.

Yet, it sounds like the likelihood of this scenario playing out has been low in QFF's eyes and they are pursuing what could be a gamble. I wonder what will it look like if this ends up not going well for QFF? What kind of back pedalling will we see or what turmoil will it cause inside QF?

Non flying guest access removal is perfectly fair though. Would barely impact any members and would help reduce overcrowding to the extent it did.

Any Seat awards were axed 10 years ago.

LTP is an addition, albeit an unachievable one!

So we're left with classic seat awards being less plentiful, but really this is across the board. It's no coincidence other partner awards (which Qantas has no control over) have also dried up over this time.

Compare with airlines like Delta who have made all sorts of controversial changes recently. QFF don't really like rocking the boat!
I also have trouble finding JCRs on partner airlines. However I have no problem getting them on AA on JL. CX and QR at 330 days when for a month they had not appeared on QFF.
Probably partner airlines are tired that their own frequent flyers can’t ever get awards on QF.

I am currently weighing up whether to apply for a credit card with 80,000 QF points or with 80,000+30,000 Velocity points - both Westpac, same annual fee. It may be moot anyway as I am getting rejections for credit card applications at the moment, but interesting that this is making me think.

If you're still primarily using QF points for classic awards on QF partners outside of Australia, I wouldn't be too worried. But Velocity points are useful for getting to and from SIN on SQ to start a OWA.

Prior to 2024, I'd never opened a Velocity-earning card. This year I've done 9 so far (across two people) plus the Star Alliance card twice. The lack of classic award availability — and the fact that it appears Qantas is not serious about fixing it in a way that is remotely attractive to me — has led me to diversify. Still going to maintain WP for the time being, but next long haul flights are on United & Singapore.

If there existing market share is 66%+ then as soon as people stop work travel, who do they call when they “pay your own way”?

Even from the OPs here, it would appear many are price sensitive when it comes out there own pocket - even with the “you gotta spend money to make money (points) from which people want at least a fair return and a fair chance of the promised future reward actually being available and achievable and bookable at the time of their choosing.

Nine News says Qantas Classic+ is coming where 1 point = $0.01 for seat purchases in Y.

Could these all be "controlled leaks" to run it up the flagpole and see who salutes, so to speak? And what are the chances of a backdown if there is some significant negative public reactions, do we think?

There will be no back down of the product. Pricing, who knows.

Exactly the sort of PR Qantas is looking for. 'More seats' for 'fewer points'.

Maybe I've overestimated Joe Average and they'll love this new 1c/pt scheme because it seems 'so simple' with 'so many seats' even though the points are costing them over 1c/pt in credit card surcharges (especially as pretty much no cards earn 1c/pt these days).

Interestingly, they're stressing 1c/pt for Y only, so we're definitely getting something different for J/F.

'Existing classic rewards allocation wont be affected' which in many cases I suspect is zero. What is the betting that on many flights the only availability will be Classic+?

Starting to wonder now if these Classic+ Reward options will come with anything that the current Classic Reward doesn't... like maybe some SCs for non PC/PC+ members (or perhaps a boost to the earned SCs for those with PC/PC+). Possibly Classic+ flights will be eligible for the 4 QF flight segment minimum counts for status attainment (not an issue for PC/PC+, but adds something for others). What else are we thinking?...

I think that anyone with enough points to afford a Classic+ flight would almost certainly be a PC/PC+ member. 🙃

Is there any hope that this will be available on JV partner flights like EK and AA??
Almost certainly not. I do see where you're going with the JV thought, but tbh I can't see it happening.

Still, I've been wrong before.... :)
