Wendouree allocations and general discussion

Charged me $313 incl delivery and I thought ah, must be 3 bottles of $55's and 3 bottles of $45's.

No Shiraz but $30 discount :)

Nope, my bad - it's 3x cab malbec and 3x malbec. Will I be doing the wine a disservice if I drink the malbec now?

Whee! Mine came today too :D

Ended up with 2 each of the Shiraz Mataro, the Shiraz Malbec and the Cabernet Malbec.

I'm being incredibly lazy here I know, but do any of the Wendouree experts have an opinion on when I should drink these for optimum enjoyment?

It's all a guess because the wine is so new and Wendouree don't submit their wines for judging, but at least 5 yrs. Preferably 10. Although this is based on past experiences for me. I'm drinking my allocations of 2005's now.

The most recent Wendouree I've opened was a 2011 and I only opened that because I'd been mislead into thinking that 2011 was a short term cellaring prospect, and that's just not the case.

I missed out on an allocation this year. :(

I usually buy a couple of cases each year and have the red crayon mark on my order form.

I received a letter from Wendouree last week informing me that they ran out of the straight varietals but some of the blends were still available. Victoria must have been the last state to be processed this year.

I cracked a Malbec, it's drinking beautifully...That said, I've put the other two away for a while

I am glad to hear that - I have some blends I am going to try before next vintage to get an idea of which ones I like - then I will be happy to buy more to down and get the cellar time they deserve

It's tricky, I cracked the Shiraz Mataro last year and I found that was a bit too young to enjoy properly. The Cab/Malbec was the big favourite over on Winefront and was apparently drinking well now

VIC
red crayon
box of each
CC charged 14th July
Wines started arriving 21st July

People mainly miss out if they cherry pick the hot auction wines (Shiraz and Cab)

This is my 3rd year on the list and have always ordered a box of each wine and have always got my full allocation.

I have just seen this thread...

Wendouree is my absolute favourite wine. I just had my last Cabernet / Malbec and it was fantastic.

I need to check out how to get on this list. I bought 12 bottles from wine auction paying +/- $60 - $70 per bottle about 5 years ago..

Just write to them via snail mail and request to join the mailing list.

No special handshake required.

Order a spread rather than just shiraz or cabernet that invariably gets auctioned.

Read the entire thread for information about getting on the list, including peoples experiences of success or other wise for this year.

Based on the prices 5 years ago, that's about 40 to 50% more than prices direct from Wendouree, but this is the reality for people that aren't on the list.

Yes I will read through.

At the time it was pretty frantic and I have seen them go up to $85 for the Cab/Malbec. Appreciate the input from you all

Indeed. I've regularly seen the Shiraz for over $100. I've often thought about selling some of mine to finance other purchases.

No idea why people pay this. It's relatively easy to get on the list, some effort, organisation and patience is required - but that is all.

Sent letter off last week and received a written reply yesterday advising on the list and only a few bottles left if I was interested in 2013.

Anyway on the list now. Thanks for everyone's comments

I had no idea about this little Aussie institution (I am relatively new to the Aussie wine scene). It sounds so quaint. I love the fact there is a little old fashioned effort on both sides to sustain this business. I will apply to get on the waiting for next year (sounds like this year is wrapped up).

Thank you Dr Ralph (and others) for all the helpful tips above. Greatly appreciated.

I can't wait to try their wines.

Re: Wendouree 2016 allocations

Excitement is building for the 2016 releases. I'm hearing that there may be a shortage of shiraz this year.

Indeed - spoke to them a few weeks ago to change address - indicated full spread of wines + the muscat

Also indicated that the 16 could be one for the ages when released!

When are letters normally sent again? need to clean out the credit card!
