Keep all clothes and baggage off the carpet floors to avoid bed bugs.
Pee on toes in the shower to stop tinea.
Ues my own Rexona and Head and Shoulders in travel sizes.
Figure out air conditioning temperature
Figure out tv remote.
Plug in Tumi adaptors to charge phone, IPad and Resmed sleep machine.
Bed bugs appear to be a peculiarly American problem, at least for the moment. I've travelled extensively in Australia, Asia and Europe, and I've never come across bed bugs except in some pretty daggy hotels (and I use the word advisedly) in India while backpacking over 35 years ago.

Yes @ZigZagWanderer i only get to stay in hotels in the US and Singapore these days as we have apartments when we travel to the east coast of Australia.
Bed bugs are hitchhikers and blood suckers so best to avoid them. It isn’t always cheap hotels that have them.
Actually i got some bites on a plane in the US where the seat was fabric based rather than leather.

a/c or heat on full...jam an old credit card into power save socket so it runs while I am out.
use bathroom...take toilet paper from behind the cistern and put it where I can reach it.
leave and explore...I wanna see where I am.

Wonder how that could have happened. No flags on the screen when keying the cards at the front desk?
Wasn’t one of those ‘by the hour‘ Vegas rooms?!😉.
I disinfect every surface with wet wipes or spray sanitiser.
Then check I have the safe working and put everything in
Diito - pocket good bathroom products/those cloth laundry bags with the nice embroidery for weekends away
Ask concierge for best coffee
Get rid of the bed runner - loathe them

I always check where the fire escape is.
I never stay in a room so high up that i cannot make the descent. Worst one was 38 floors with the fire brigade in attendance.
Have attended a fire and earthquake drill in Los Angeles as they can have pretty big shakers.
i avoid high humidity places to avoid going troppo.

One thing I do is check that the TV works. Getting it fixed late at night can eat into your sleep time.

I always do this and walk to the exits and check the escape doors. A family member was in a hotel fire in the 70s in the US and was lucky to escape thanks to another patron knowing where the exit was in the smoke, so it became a family ritual on arrival.

In bed bug hotspots I put my bag in the bathroom before checking the bed for signs of bugs. Also pull back any bed covers because they are inevitably horribly dirty.

Same with the kettle emptying and refilling, boiling and washing glasses and crockery mentioned a few times. I also empty out the ice from the container and refill and freeze.

Bedbugs??? What sort of hotels are we talking about? I've stayed in hotels, and motels, all over Australia. In Europe its varied from small family hotels to large international hotels and never experience bedbugs.

And the water temperature in the hot tap. A lukewarm shower in the morning doesn't go down well.

That is pretty similar to me.
I also check for bed bugs, check if the alarm clock is still set (as I have had more than a few 3am or other nasty timed alarms going off unexpectedly over the years) and wipe down the TV remote. If there isn't a spare blanket, I order one as no matter what the air con temp says, I am always freezing by midnight.

While I am yet to encounter any at an Australian hotel, the couple of times I have found them when overseas were at 4 star hotels in NYC and London.

Not much for me.

Check for possible noise sources - exhaust fans, elevators or vending if close by. If yes, get room changed.

At night - make sure the blinds are closed tight; I take a peg with me to peg them closed against light.

Check that the air con works, or I can figure out how it works

Clear the cough off the bed and the beds ide table

Find the power plugs!!!

Turn bar fridge off if possible (noise)

Check fire exit routes

Pretty much this.

Check for noise - get a new room if unacceptable.
Check for light that will make sleeping a problem.
Check for temperature - and if it looks like it can't be fixed, get a new room pronto.
Check for exits.
Check safe works (a pain if you can't lock stuff up later on and "maintenance has left for the night" when all it needs is 4 AA batteries).
Check security.
Check for convenient power before you're tired.

Get out of the hotel for dinner, and not somewhere recommended by the hotel staff, unless you trust them based on previously received good advice :)

Mrs. Letsfly will take photos or videos of the room before anything is moved/touched for memories. When I am travelling alone, I am requested to do it on behalf of her.

Also check power points. If there aren't enough ask for a multiboard.
