You can use gift vouchers to avoid card fees already and still purchase with your Amex.
Gift vouchers from whom? Are you giving up the cash value of these gift vouchers when you use them to pay the fees?
I would have thought that to encourage people to use their co-branded Amex cards, Qantas (and Virgin) would waive the credit card payment fees.
There are no credit card payment fees on the US carriers, but their co-branded credit cards provide additional benefits such as (depending on the carrier) priority boarding, extra checked bags, reduced mileage awards, priority security screening, no foreign transaction fees. These are on base level co-branded cards, not even the ones which provide lounge membership or in the case of certain AA and Delta co-branded cards, the equivalent of Status Credits based on spend levels.
I would have thought exempting the Qantas Amex cards from the credit cards fees would be a good start...
