Flight or Destination?

One asked me the other day "can you just tell me briefly how you got business class FF tickets to Japan"?
This is definitely the downside of being a FF maniac (maniac in a good way, of course). People who don't know about it/can't be bothered doing their own legwork expect you to be able to score them their ticket "just like that".
A good response would be "just read AFF, you'll learn the ropes".

<snip> None of my friends are interested. One asked me the other day "can you just tell me briefly how you got business class FF tickets to Japan"? .....hmmm, where do I start?
I feel so alone sometimes.

Yeap, it's a problem.

What is worse is when they only half listen so when they go and try it becomes more expensive than had they simply purchased tickets the old fashioned way, because then it becomes your fault that it didn't work out for them.

Actually I quite enjoy helping friends :). I have booked quite a few award flights for one friend in particular, although he has now become competent himself.

I only travel for leisure not work so definitely both for me.

Specific destinations tend to be influenced by sweet spots in award charts for flights or hotels, for example we added Conad Rangali to our last European trip because it was only 40K AA miles to fly EY F & Apartments MLE-AUH-LHR. Then there was plenty of availability out of ZRH so flew SQ Suites home from there, otherwise we probably wouldn't have gone to the Maldives or Switzerland. Conrad Koh Samui was similar as it was the same amount of KF miles to add USM as PER-SIN by itself.

International J & F is always exciting especially when trying a new product looking forward to trying EK F and returning to Rangali later in the year.

I enjoy the planning and the destinations - while the flights are (generally) a means to an end, on occasion they will be the end in themselves (when flying J or for a (rare) status run). When flying in J (and sometimes in Y) the part of the trip I look forward to starts from check-in and continues from there. Arguably, even in J, once the meal is taken, and maybe a movie, the flight will start to drag, so then the destination becomes paramount.

Having said all that, I would probably still take a J flight to "nowhere" - particularly if someone else was paying!

If its a solo work trip, domestic or international.. It's definitively the journey rather than the destination.

Specially now with the Amex platinum. Domestic Y is fun with free virgin lounge, free PP meals etc

Last couple of years I've managed to keep all international travel in J which has been so awesome.. Hope I can continue it

Domestic - Destination
International in Y - Destination
International in J or better - Both!

A lot of time is spent on here trying to make sure the international is in J or better!

International in J or better - Both!

Great table here is my version!

Domestic - Destination
International in Y - Destination
International in J - Destination
International in F - Destination
International/Domestic Private - Destination (Private = If I’m travelling with the big wigs)

The volume of travel I do just makes it all feel like work now. I’ve actually had 30 days grounded and have never been happier but a slew of international travel is looming about to hit that I genuinely feel ill about :(

Destination. No matter what cabin we fly, the class action is always on the ground.

J just about makes flying bearable for me although it can be a nice experience the destination is the only reason I fly.

Wouldn't earn status credits anyway :p
My major bugbear! :( I fly 80-115 sectors a year, but only about 30 are commercial, so I struggle to keep WP with both QFF and VFF (did someone mention 1st World Problem). In fact I've flown 6 sectors in the last 4 days so it's looking like I might break my 115 record this year. Of those 6, three were commercial, but only 1 which earns (PNG Air is supposed to start their FFer scheme this year).

Not those kind of status credits anyway :)
Honestly sometimes commercial F is better - why? Because you are locked away in your own world. Private you are generally working the entire trip and layout is much more open.
