I have just used my Qantas frequent flyer points to purchase a domestic flight online - I've only ever done it over the phone previously. The flight is from Sydney to Perth in April, and cost me 36,000 points plus $24.71 charges/taxes. I chose this option rather than a total of 42,000 points, which includes the taxes etc.

On receiving my booking confirmation, I notice it outlines under Points and Surcharges, Fees and Tazes the following:

Points & credit card = 36,000 + $24.71 (AUD)*
*Excludes local airport taxes collected at time of check-in.

What does this mean??! I did think that $24.71 seemed quite light in the taxes to be paid (especially when the other option was 6,000 points), however I'm now left wondering if I'm going to be asked to pay up again when I get to the airport in Sydney?

Anyone who can shed some light on this would be greatly appreciated - I've lived abroad for over 7 years now, so am not quite sure how the airport taxes etc work in Australia.

Thank you.

Welcome to AFF!

You have nothing to worry about for a SYD-PER. All taxes are paid as part of the fare so there is no additional collection.

Some airports/countries have departure taxes which are collected at the airport. Eg, some airports in New Zealand (Wellington, Queenstown and Christchurch I believe), Indonesian airports and there are probably others too.

Indeedly. Usually these are international ports with departure taxes that are not bundled in with the ticket price.

I think MNL (Philippines) still levy their departure taxes separate to the air ticket.

The comment by QF about the "excludes taxes..." bit is a cover-all statement you'll find on almost any airline's booking T&Cs and what not; it isn't usually made specific to the itinerary in case the goal posts shift at particular airports.

Thanks both for your very quick replies, really appreciate it! These days you just never know as there alwasy appears to be so many hidden and additional charges on flights....

Thanks again.
