There's a couple of current threads that seem to suggest that an obsession with elite frequent flying is a bit weird

I can accept weird....but it did prompt me to think did those obsessive AFFrs Have any other interests and hobbies in their lives?

I know I do, and I am sure those who have been tagged as flounge addicts have too.

So, what else, apart from flying, do you do?

Me?, wine club, book club, opera, astronomy, embroidery, mentoring entrepreneurs, cooking and entertaining. Also enjoy the rare treat of shopping for decorative/artistic household items with the rest of the family, LOTO and DD ( which translates to Leader of the Opposition and Darling Daughter) :)

It's ok jacfin to be a bit different. Otherwise there would be one style of home, one paint colour, one motor vehicle and so on.
I do hope you can make it to Perth drinks at the Royal tomorrow night so that we can prove ourselves to be totally weird or otherwise.
It is all just a game you should play hard, play fair and if you must ,make it a hobby.

I can see where you are coming from, but surely VIP perks in aviation is something that has been a long-standing obsession with even the non FF crowd...

I joined the forum to learn more about the elite level of flying, because most travel writers cover destinations and not experiences.

Me, I am a frequent flyer, mainly for pleasure, but aviation isn't my only hobby.

I'm a crazy Chelsea FC fan, and follow all types of sports in detail. I have an affinity with good wine, fast cars, and the jet-setting lifestyle that i'm fortunate to be able to enjoy.

For work, I own a real estate agency in Melbourne, along with a list of other entrepreneurial ideas that I have worked on during my travels.

Perhaps some people frequent this site a lot more than average, but I would say that we all have our lives away from the screen.

Fun: Yes, Useful: Yes, Weird: Definitely No.

;)

Isn't everybody "special" now?

I really couldn't give a flying cough* what other people think about my flying habits or my desire to experience stuff differently to other people.

Outside of travel which consumes a small portion of my life I love to scuba dive and coincidentally frequent facilitates that :)

I'm a queenlander. That's a vocation in itself. I support the Reds, have done for about 20 years. Frequented the VIP tent back when 10 had the rugby.

Have been trying to do archery, but travel interferes as I like to spend max time with the family when at home.

Sent from my iPhone using Aust Freq Fly app so please excuse the lack of links.

I think weird was an understatement! Apparently I'll be sending my daughter to counseling because of what I've inflicted on her!

Ok on a more serious note..

Outside of work, I love flying, I have my PPL so enjoy flying myself as a hobby. Far easier to get friends along instead of when I was a skydiver!

Also love camping with mates and I am also a Scout Leader, just clocked up 9 years (was in scouts all through my life too).

During winter and when not doing F lounge runs  I'm an AFL fan and will take my daughter to the MCG and watch our beloved Tigers pull our heart strings with faint dreams of making the finals!

I travel for work.....but, I love to travel for pleasure.

Also like swimming, surfing, drinking, eating & laughing.

My work flying means that I normally maintain WP status without any dramas however, I see the true benefit of WP is when we travel as a family.

I have a PPL (but can't afford to fly much any more), I collect Lego (which costs me almost as much as supporting a PPL), I'm a member of the League of Extraordinary Gamers (Brisbane based boardgaming club).

I also coach my kid's soccer team, I'm in training to be a uniformed leader in Scouts, I drive my kids to Soccer practice, soccer matches, little athletics, dancing lessons, swimming lessons and in amongst that I even find some quality time to spend with my kids :)

Ah, glad to see I'm not the only one! The Tiges have given me about a quarter century of disappointment so far...

Geez you lot are weird - having hobbies outside of maximising your SC's and FF Points, whilst deciding whether to select Seat 80A or fly JQ35 for an FLounge run... disgusted with your attitude

I actually started travelling because of my "other activities"...

Now, like simongr, the travel indeed facilitates the sporting activities... but the "weird FF" side maintains the status and priviledges thus making the whole travel process more comfortable...

I am a very keen competitive target shooter... in a target discipline that is most popular in the USA... hence the 4 trips this year over there... 3 to compete (US Nationals, World Champs and a Regional Championship in New England) and one - which I returned from today - to the annual Convention.... where I qualified as an Instructor Examiner.. and can now conduct courses to qualify others as RO's... as well as attending several seminars conducted by the very best in the sport....

Thanks to TK's "generosity" earlier this year I am heading to AZ in February for another comp... via BKK/IST/GRU/BOG and JFK..

What is weird about that??:D;)

I was a golf nut long before I ignited my passion for air travel. Now the 2 go hand in hand.

I travelled everywhere with the VN Commodore and played some courses one can only dream about. I remember one trip I drove with my father Sydney-Mildura on the one day, played 4 games of golf in 2 days and returned to Sydney the next day. Where did I get that energy?

A couple of trips Sydney-Melbourne via the coast road in a day, followed by 8 games of golf in 5 days and then return to Sydney. Played Royal Melbourne East and West in the one day for $50. I have also been up and down the NSW coast all the way up to Tweed Heads.

Now I fly everywhere and hire a car to play golf except for Thailand.

I have just recently completed playing my 200th different golf course which is not an easy achievement in it's own right. My next target is to obviously get to 300 and hopefully 500 or more!

I used to play ten pin bowling but tendonitis took care of that hobby and I also played competitive darts and will do so again when I return to Sydney.

Unfortunately I have also had a few obsessive and costly hobbies over the years.

Impressive - must have a decent handicap.

Used to play of 6 and 7 (and best I had was 5.4) but not these days.

Although in Thailand my handicap is 6-8 playing off the white markers which are generally 6,500 yards. I may try playing some courses from the blue markers which are 7,000 yards but one can almost forget trying to play off the black markers at 7,500+ yards. That is pure torture.

But sounds like much better value for money! Costs the same for the game, and you get to have more swings - seems like better value to me.

LOL This has always been my view. I have always felt that I get much better value from a round of golf than many of my significantly more skilled friends and colleagues!

As for other things I do I'm afraid work, if you can call it that, and travel pretty much consume my life at the moment. Weekends, when I'm not traveling are at their best when doing nothing!!
