What I ate today - the food thread

Prime rib roast and braised pork shoulder in the HKG Wing First lounge buffet. Delicious. Sitting here contemplating seconds.

That's a way too high Vegemite to butter ratio in my books!

Everyone has their own ratio preference. I've perfected mine over many years. The wife has different tastes. I often make her toast but never let her make mine.

Superb congee for breakfast this morning at Lawyers, Guns, Money in Melbs.

Sadly it's their last day of trading, which is quite sad given the coughpy restaurants that seem to survive for ever.

Their sister restaurant (Lee Ho Fok) is Melbourne's best modern Chinese.

Durians

Superb selection at Durianss2.com

I had 3 of these before heading to KLIA. Unsure if this eased my operational upgrade to 1A on MH607 and then EK404

Mid price is about RM$35 peer kg. The average durian is 1.5kg and contain about 10-12 fleshy seeds.

RM$80 per kg is demanded for "Musang King" which is way over the top - the problem is that durian is now exported to China driving up local prices - sounds familiar?

The cheapest durian "Asli Durian" is about RM$15 per kg but not as tasty. (Asli - Aboriginal)

The durians are opened before you agree to purchase it. The vendors will often reject it before offering it to you. So there is quality assurance. the rejected durians are not wasted. They are reprocessed into durian icecream.

Often eaten at the same time as Mangosteens.

Vegemite...... all I can say is yuk!

Over the years I have made many a south american friend try vegemite. A couple of those people are still my friends.

Seriously, not a single one has said "yum", and about half suspect I have made them ingest a paste that is not actually a food product.

But personally, love the stuff! My preference is when on toast, it is spread thin over melted butter, but better still, it is eaten in large quantities with big chunks of cold butter in a french stick or similar. :)

I've often thought about trying them, but have been put of by the 'no durian' signs all over Asia

Classic! I note there is no fine specified for durians? Life imprisonment?

Have never eaten one but wish to.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater and will try most things and dislike few but Durian really is revolting in the true sense of the word. Its so confusing to eat as the stench is overpowering (like the sweet smell of death and decay - ICK!!) but the taste is completely different. I guess I couldn't get past the smell....

Linger at the store and the smell will subside
