What if Corporate travel points were awarded to the company and not the individual ?

I was thinking about the increase in Silver, Gold and Platinum fliers with QF and the like , largely due to FIFO etc, and the affect it has on lounges etc.
I mean its not like they (the individuals) actually pay for any of this (mind you time away from home should have some compensation)
then I thought, what would happen if corporate travel departments from (specifically) some of the larger accounts , like BHP, RIO, Banks et al (including Government) were to say to QF and VA "from now on all travel miles must acrrue to a central account"? so that points could be used to buy seats in Y or to upgrade the chosen few?

I can almost hear sharp intakes of breath across the nation .....

I vaguely remember talk of FF Points being subject to FBT and I also would not be surprised if some companies are already denying employees these privileges, because after all they are just privileges

Generally its easier for companies to negotiate rates that dont accrue points, the smarter companies fund their corporate travel using JASAs and Mr Tax man.

As markis10 says - why would a company gamble on trying to get the flights that they need rather than just negotiating down rates. I also know personally if I was told that I would not earn points on my travel that my travel would reduce to zero.

Same here. No points or SC and it's ground zero for me.

Finance and Admin might like it but just wait until it goes up the line and the execs have to tell the CEO and his team there are no more points - for them included...my money is on it sinking without trace for another year or two...

if I was told that I would not earn points on my travel that my travel would reduce to zero.

In another life I would struggle to get people (colleagues & clients) to meet at local sites.....as soon as I mentioned locations like Perth, Hong Kong, Auckland, Shanghai, Dusseldorf, Las Vegas they couldn't get on a plane quick enough:lol:

Makes you wonder how much travel is simply not required:idea:

Agreed one of the benifits of travelling frequently is the status and points earned that makes travel so much easier. If any company opted to pool points and not allow employees to acrue status I would suggest that staff retention would be hit hard. Personaly if the company I worked for did that I would certainly consider my options.

The norm for many government agencies is no points but accrue status.

How does that actually work? - do people belong to QFF and get credited with SC's but somehow the points are diverted by Qantas to a central pool?

There would need to be significant rule changes to the programs to allow that to happen. FF accounts are individual, and the contract is between the airline and the individual.

No points are awarded, just SCs, pretty simple, and no doubt annoying to the odd public worker.

For me it wouldn't be a reduction in the travel for the current role it would be a change of role. I always want to be "on site" for every job we do - supports the team, shows respect to the people we are working with, helps me understand what actually happens and gets name away from my desk - doesn't matter if it is Melbourne, Bourke, Bermuda or London - the principal is the same...
 
Funny this is mentioned. I was reviewing emails on the weekend (and deleting). My last Qantas business newsletter had something in it about a corporate points scheme.

I believe in Germany this is a normal thing, i.e. if someone flies for work, the company keeps the points (not sure about the status). The company then has some obligation later to use those points for employee travel where possible.

Don't quote me on this one, but that's what I've heard around.

I know of a number of companies where it is written into your employment contract that all points earned whilst on business travel are for the benefit of the company.
One example used to get people to redeem at the end of each year for gift cards (heinous I know) which were than used for Xmas rewards for staff.

And then the govt contract where no points awarded

I imagine the rates of committing hari kari and/or of conselling being needed for many members of AFF would go up markedly... :)

But yes i am one of those govt workers for which these stupid rules impact, in WA i think we still get points but some corporate travel agent for government i think is meant to keep track of how many you have accrued as then you are suppose to eventually use them for govt business, so not for personal use... Dunno I haven't flown since this sort of rule came into place but i have used a few of the previous ones i had accrued... Don't ask me how you are supposed to keep track of which is yours and which are theirs and all... I would probably just be inclined to tell them i didn't have a QFF account and not opt to try and obtain them...

And well of course some of this business travel is optional rather than essential... Its why all these conferences are held in pretty decent locales and not back blocks or regional areas where cheaper rates could probably be negotiated or countries like Albania etc... :)

Certainly not the case in the company I work for. Whilst our travel policy states that FF points accrued through business travel should only be used after approval from management, in practice this is rarely the case. We are even encouraged to choose airlines with which we hold status.

In the UK I believe VS have a "double dip" scheme where employees and the company earn points. (I could be completely wrong of course, I'm only going on info from my UK colleagues.)
