No - was at bag drop five minutes before the 30 minutes before departure cutoff for bag drop - and they had only just started boarding when I got to gate 12 at the domestic terminal.

In that case you missed the bag drop cut off for domestic transfer. The domestic transfer facility has its own unpublished cut off of 1 hour before departure, due to the need to transfer the bags across the tarmac as well as taking a bus.

Without the fog in SYD you might've had better luck but the majority of flights were cancelled and/or delayed and you arriving at 8am were pushed down the list as arriving late.

Look at the bigger picture - Sunday was bad day in SYD with very heavy fog and school holiday commencement - you were lucky to get home at all.
