What is the attraction of lounges?

An answer to the thread topic was given to me by my daughter today (even though we were NOT discussing AFF - I spare my family from that whole side of my flying problem :) )

She is young, and just did her first solo trip, BNE-CBR and back a few days later. I had got her the ticket with points, and the downwards leg was in J (was the cheapest option with points o that date)

She was not keen to go into the lounge by herself, but after sitting in the public areas for a while, she went to buy a bottle of water and baulked at the $6 cost! So she slipped into the lounge. As she said to me today, "Good WIFI, space, a power point, apple juice and snacks - lounges are great!"

How terribly disappointing. I am disappointed that I will not be able to use the lounge in DPS (it isn't a Qantas Club however a QC member travelling on a QF can use it). I will be flying Jetstar. It's a little unfortunate.

I really just want to get back to the lounge in Adelaide. I really only live a ten minute drive from the airport, so I was contemplating just buying a $45 Jetstar sale ticket to Melbourne or something, getting my boarding pass, and then just using the lounge for a few hours (and not jumping on the flight) LOL. I'm so excited to use it again and I won't have the opportunity for several months as my next flight is with VA from SYD -- CNS.

There is an even easier way to get in for free. I'm sure those who have access and departing ADL would guest you in. Save your $45.

See this sub-forum Lounge Meetups

Get two tickets and visit a lounge in another state. If you travel to Melbourne make sure it is actually MEL and not AVV, no lounges there.

Ooh, not a bad point, although I guess that would be a whole day of travelling. I would love to just sit in the lounge one morning/afternoon and then go about my day in Adelaide. Still, worth considering your suggestion :)

Have never used on-arrival lounge access - usually in too much of a hurry. But just to check with those that do, if I arrive in BNE on a domestic QF flight, can I go in to the Business lounge and have a shower? (P1 status)
Yep. :)

Domestic QF lounges you can wander into on the day of travel, regardless of whether it's before or after the flight ... internationally, it's only before the flight.
I guess this doesn't affect anyone who's travelling in the way Qantas wants, because internationally the security would stop you from getting to where the lounge is after you've landed.

After flight is only for Platinum's and above.

Yes, I think Platinum 1 is above Platinum. :)

Although, you can also use a domestic business lounge afterwards if you’ve been on an international first or international business flight on the same day.

A kind member of AFF guested me into the ADL lounge today. I'll stop sharing my excitement because I've gone on about it enough, but I stayed there from 3PM-9PM just working on my laptop, eating, and happily chatting to people. It was wonderful. If anyone is ever in the ADL lounge and could guest me in then I would greatly appreciate it. I had a fantastic day at the lounge. Unfortunately I'm not flying JQ or QF for a month now, so I'll need to rely on guesting heh.

If you're back in CNS anytime soon and our paths cross, I'd be happy to guest you into the VA lounge. At CNS, I like the VA lounge better, but usually the QF lounge food is better.

Otherwise, if our paths cross in BNE, I can guest you into the QF business lounge there. It's a quite a bit nicer than the QP!

Proviso is me actually flying the appropriate airline. That changes on a regular basis. Keep an eye at both lounge threads. I'll try to keep that more up to date.

Swanning it - how kind of you to offer! I would just love that. I'm back in Cairns from 26th May - 09 June :) I've never used the VA lounge there (I've only ever used Sydney) so I'd be very keen to check it out.

Agree re CNS; the QP is like a cafeteria while the VA lounge is, in comparison, more "loungeish".

Next at CNS is 23/5 so miss out on that one. Then I'm back on the 9/6 but I'm booked on QF709 and I guess you don't need guesting to the QP.

My next VA flights out of CNS dom are 4/8, 15/8 and 1/9.

Otherwise I'll be BNE Int on 16/5 and either 17/5 or 18/5.

Of course, we have a special place for such invitations going forward: Lounge Meetups

As Gold for Qantas, I've regularly (over a dozen times) got into the lounge on arrival at both Adelaide and Melbourne.

Similarly as Gold for Virgin, I've regularly (over two dozen times) got into the lounge on arrival at both Adelaide and Melbourne.

Generally only in there for a short while, but some circumstances have been longer (i.e in the morning and a few hours before first meeting or waiting for colleague on another flight)

Really? Wow. If that can sometimes be the case then I'll try my best to achieve gold. What do you say to them? Do you just simply ask and then state that your gold status?

Suspect its a case of them not bothering to look at the boarding ticket very closely. Ie just noticing it shows gold and letting you in.

Having used the J lounge in PER both arriving and departing and showing the mobile boarding pass, they just glance at my phone and don't scan it.

Virgin ADL were well aware it was it was arrival (I arrive there in the mornings around 9ish) and have no problem.
Qantas ADL similarly were well aware as arrived there in the mornings (also around 9ish)
Virgin MEL (when I arrive evening) have had no problems. In fact both Virgin lounges (ADL and MEL) took my card and confirmed I was on a flight that day so no problem.
Qantas MEL I just showed my card at the door (in the evening), so that could be the case of not checking, however in Adelaide Qantas do check (as it is quieter that time of the morning) and have no problem. In fact I've even heard over the plane speaker that any Gold/Plats are welcome to use the lounge on arrival, that's what prompted me to do that.
Virgin SYD, I've only done this once (in the morning) as too busy and had no problem.
Qantas SYD, I've never had a need to try.

I was reminded this morning that when guesting someone into Qantas Lounges, they need to leave with you. They are not allowed to settle in and stay all day.

Thanks very much for the info.
My issue is that I don’t have status - I have a red card, however I am a qantas club member. I wonder, if I went in on arrival during a quieter time, if they’d let me in.

What do you think?
