What is Virgin Australia's strategy (post-administration)?

Yep. Which means demand must be there for both, and will be impacting yields for both.
Or that both VA and QF will do their up most to remove Rex from this and other trunk routes as quickly as possible...funny how prices can fall with genuine competition isn't it? 😔

It's almost the end of the week. "Supposedly" due to the other sources in that locked thread, there was supposed to be some announcement "confirming" the 'Qatar acquiring 20% of VA' "next week".

I'd say the likelihood of this is possible decent but timing could be all over the place.

Thats usually how these kinds of leaks end up as last minute delays creep up.

Australia has a population almost addicted to overseas travel, much, by necessity, long haul flying. We could easily sustain an additional international airline, properly structured and funded (ie 'big brother' needed) and picking its markets thoughtfully. Lets hope so.
With the news today that VA is axing its sole long-haul service, one can only wonder how much longer will people continue to beat this dead horse before finally coming to a conclusion that we simply can't sustain more than one long-haul airline.

Technically CNS-HND was still considered short haul intl, despite being just over one hour longer (7:30) than the longest DPS flight of 6:20

Horses for courses. I still am coming to terms that sometimes Sydney to Perth can take 5 hours 30 minutes which my flight did last week. That's nearly as long as Europe to Doha on a luxurious Qatar widebody while i am cramped in a 737 or worse a Jetstar whatever....

Yair. Read the bit that you quoted.

I'm patiently awaiting the next update on QR 20% of VA, refreshing AFR for the next instalment :)

Australia already has a second one hence why it seems like its hard. For the general public JQ =\= QF even if its the same group at a corporate level.

And as I've said when SIA group carries almost as much traffic as QF internationally, you don't need to wonder if the demand is there. Whether any airline (Australian or otherwise) is saavy enough to win the market share is another story. But that's a business strategy case study not a demand case study.

Certainly is super quiet on the float front. Not even any leaks yet. The whole Rex thing has obviously thrown a spanner in the works, at the end of the day that would only push the valuation up.

If the don’t hear anything in the next week or two, it could be possible they are looking at a H2 listing (May 2025), obviously results for this half will be much more favourable with increased margin minus Rex.

Where are you getting your numbers ? Qantas group carried 29.6% of international passengers in May, Singapore Airlines group carried 12.6%.

Perhaps the quote from OP should say “SIA group carries almost as much med-long haul traffic as …”?

The numbers are much closer if you exclude the statistics for the near haul pseudo-domestic operations to Bali, NZ and Fiji.

Let's wait and see in this case in regard to QR. The same News Corp rag (along with some Aviation "Geeks/Fandom" media such as Crikey and various Pilot forums) claimed that "Bain would be officially announcing that they'd be selling a 20% stake to QR next week" a few months ago.

“Apparently this time it's real" 🤪

Well it won’t be a few more months if they intend to list this half. They would need a deal done in the next week to two.

Only really around 12 weeks to any listing if they intend to be floated H1.

All the Murdoch media is covering this now. The Australian:
"Big cash splash as Virgin deal nears.
Bain Capital is on the verge of selling 20 per cent of Virgin Australia to Qatar Airways, and has just ticked off a 33c dividend that will further enrich outgoing CEO Jayne Hrdlicka and other execs."

And some of us have been saying this (without being gutter press) for ages. We shall see, let's see how it unfolds....and OneWorld here we come...now let's see if Qantas prefers SkyTeam or Star Alliance. ,😜😜🤭🤭😉

The Australian reporting the float has been delayed by a further year, with estimated listing now November 2025.

The delay is due to Virgin getting distracted with the Rex collapse.

That explains the silence, certainly would have expected something from Virgin in the last 2 weeks at the latest. Also seems like Jayne Hrdlicka isn’t going anywhere just yet.
