What scares you about travel?

Yes actively looking at booking in 2026 which will be my 80th year but doubt I will still be travelling OS after that. Possibly still spending Christmas in Bangkok excepted,
Sorry to hear that drron. I too am concerned how I'm going to fare next March, I will be 72 by then, with knee replacement and incontinence at times! And in Economy, will I be able to travel when I'm 80. I'm addicted to London and the countryside also.
My worst fear is falling over and the hips going.

Hi,
I am 74 yrs old, and after 3 encounters with cancer over last 11 yrs.

Now I am clear and trying to keep fit, walking 3km almost every day.

Never give up, be positive 🍀🍀🍀

With cancer there are treatment protocols so never giving up is feasible. However I have a muscular dystrophy which doesn’t have treatment. So I need to be realistic. I’m certainly not giving up and have more than doubled my daily steps to try and keep as much muscle as possible.
The person I want to emulate is Neil Daniher whose fight with MND is just amazing. Usual life expectancy is 2-3 years . He was diagnosed 10 years ago.
As Winston Churchill said- never, never, never, never give up. But I need also to be realistic.

I'm still busy travelling solo at 69, female. I love the freedom of doing my own thing and discovering new experiences. I'm very organised and cautious so seldom fearful as I will have planned everything. Don't care for particularly lawless places, but do love the US which can be stressful... the guns. Fond memories of New Orleans but a couple of uncomfortable encounters. Am a slightly nervous flyer though so choose my airlines accordingly.

I guess the only thing that scares me about travel is to stay away from genuine 3rd world countries or countries with high crime rates. I have no regrets about avoiding South America, Africa and most of Asia.
I’m 66 and yet to get to South America (but I will once my wife retires) but frankly these types of countries I’ve enjoyed visiting the most and not yet ready to stop, each to their own. Yes I need to a bit more careful these days and and stay in nicer accommodation, not backpack, and generally take it a bit easier but these are the places where this isn’t that hard. Did Central Asia this year, first time I’ve ever taken a tour, Europe for Xmas, will probably take a few more Uber’s than usual as my wife broke her leg skiing 4 months ago.

Next year Central America for me (combination of tours and independent) for 5 weeks and then India for 5 weeks with the wife. Am I scared, not really. I’ve learnt there are some things you need to do in these countries to stay safe (don’t flash your cash, understand the local scams and avoid them, stay in nicer accomodation but don’t flaunt it, listen to the locals about where to go or not) and in most of those countries a little money goes a long way so you can do things like hire your own driver etc. These help a lot in staying safe.

I would say, getting mugged or robbed would scare me.
Have never ventured far since migrating to Aust, only NZ and Singapore, and back to Malaysia few years ago.
Same or most similar language, and dialects Singapore and Malaysia, tame, so so, and NZ while they have a lot of beggars, scary, but on a scale of being mugged or robbed, that ie, mugged or robbed would be worst.
Heh, don't dare to put my self out there, ie, go walkabout in Seoul at night in winter, without any knowledge of the language except Anyong Ha*(na)*seo, would also scare me, to a 2nd degree.

What a wonderful thread.
So many travel experiences by everyone. My first big solo trip was at 19. I was young and loved the experience of meeting new people and exploring new cultures.
Now I travel with my husband and we have enjoyed and experienced wonderful places and opportunities. And have had a few curved ball experiences along the way.

I am the trip planner, booker and organiser, so unlike when I was younger and carefree, I overthink lots of things and worry more about what ifs.
But still love it!
