What to do about the Optus and future data breaches?

Biggest issue imo is the wait in the queue at the licensing centre and potential issues with rental car companies not appreciating a temporary paper license.
Just correcting myself here from the WA DOT FAQs:

5. Will I be able to keep my old licence card?
Yes, you will be able to retain your current driver’s licence card as DoT appreciates customers may need a photographic identity document for other purposes while waiting for a new card to arrive.

Confirmation just now of exposure.
During further analysis as part of our ongoing investigation, we can confirm that the licence number on your Driver Licence was exposed. Please note, a copy of your Photo ID has not been exposed.

That's taken long enough - I got my confirmation a few days back.

This is my second confirmation one that my details have been breached. I received the first on the Saturday as it started which advised the possibility. .

Yes the first one was very general. I’m still waiting for them to specifically say what they leaked so I can work out what to replace.

I received an email a day or three after this fiasco started indicating some of my ID data was compromised but not exactly what.

Using the URL methods referred to early in this thread I was able to ascertain that my driver's licence number and expiry as well as name address and DOB had been exposed. (I see that the URL method no longer works with the information now being masked.)

No queue when applying to change my QLD driver licence numberIMG-20221007-WA0002.jpgIMG-20221007-WA0001.jpg

Mrs NM had to renew her Qld drivers license this week. Nothing to do with Optus data hack - just the regular 5-year renewal and this year she needed to update the photo so had to do it in person. Had to queue 20 mins outside the TMR office, then another 40 mins wait once she made it inside the building.

I fortunately renewed mine in 2020 (after I signed up with Optus) but I made the mistake of getting a new photo (I didn’t know I was allowed to keep the existing one). I had the NSW service app open with my drivers licence and the photo updated and I aged 5 years before my very eyes…😳

We are a very unlucky family and never win anything, zero, zip, nada, nothing. Never had a free seat upgrade. It was no surprise then we haven't won the Optus lottery either. Family tradition pays off for once.

But what to do, should we stay or should we go. Well the genie is already out of the bottle, nothing is going to change that. Hopefully a board shuffle will ensure better governance as so far the various directors who have spoken on media have been uninspiring. Anyway, it is unlikely to happen again, .... right.
If I got angry with every business who pissed me off I'd be nowhere. I am staying put.

I had formal advice from the NSW Government that they do not recommend replacing my licence as only the Lic # was revealed, not the card #.

Does that make any sense from your experience? Have you ever been asked to enter your card number along with licence number to verify ID?

Yes, for example all the Credit rating places required the card number as well as the DL as proof of ID.

Crazy. My ID checks have only used the licence number not the card number. As as a director I've had several. One as recently as three months ago. All I plugged in was my DL which was only 9 months old. If it true it's not needed then why did Optus email me to tell me to get a new licence?

Not for NSW licence (see my earlier comment).
ID checks are National though. The only time I was asked for the card number was for my ID check for the SA Govt portal. I didn't need that number to create the GovId account and have strong security.

As per the example I mentioned, when I was getting my credit reports, as soon as I selected NSW DL as the primary ID, it then opened a further field for the card number. No card #, do not pass ”Go”.

I have seen this on other things, like applying for a UBank account a year or so ago.

Every club you enter in NSW usually asks you to place you driver's licence into a card reader. Is anyone worried about the security or lack of with your local club?
