What would you like to see on the new IFE System?

They wouldn't expect to recoup their initial costs overnight. They will fill seats if they offer an inflight product that gives people a reason to fly the airline. AVOD could be a real draw card for them, and would certainly help their continued push to change that LCC perception.

As for advertising costs, they were never overly concerned about the extremely poor uptake of the Live2Air product, as they had them all paid off through mostly the advertising revenue alone. I recall VS play a whole series of advertisements almost like a commercial break on TV, prior to playing their Safety Demonstration, a clever way to sell advertising time for a captured audience.

Would we be able to find one person to say they would be absolutely against Virgin installing this product??

Just do it!

RED is on one domestic aircraft out of a fleet of 80 or so. Unless you are flying to PER you have 0% chance of getting it. If you do fly to PER you still only have a 30% chanceif getting it. It's not like this is a fleet wide rollout. Excuse me if I fail to get excited.

Actually, i was planning on booking the MEL-SYD A330 morning service by default once it starts next month. Would have thought the odds there were considerably better than zero on that.

BTW tickets currently selling for $88 o/w on most dates i looked at (from mid next month) - which is $11 cheaper than the cheapest Qantas fare.

I assume it will be 50% chance as XFC would have RED aswell.

The article in the Australian clearly says that "pre-existing Emirates configuration but will eventually be converted to the new product" so the odds are currently 1/3 soon to be 2/4, will be 4/6 when the two new a330s arrive and 100% when the conversions are complete. It would be nice to see a timetable for the conversion but either way the odds will improve fairly quickly.

Here is a sneak peek inside XFC, it's pretty clear they have used the existing RED entertainment system.

I am starting to think the iPad or tablet option may be the way to go, here is why:
  • Tablet can be mounted on the seat back and removed if the guest wants to play a game or read in a more comfortable position.
  • If there is a problem with one of the tablets it can quickly be replaced saving costs and assuring every guest always has a working system.
  • The picture quality could be better (depends on the tablet).
  • Can store the same amount of content as the best built in AVOD systems currently in the market.
  • Children are able to use it with more ease because it can be dismounted and hand held
  • The fleet could be fitted with tablets quickly with little infrastructural costs like a built in system
Basically, the tablets (if done right!) could do the same thing as a 'built in' system but have more flexibility and cost less.

Wow, that's some lateral thinking that I was not equiped to do!

I was about to post "I hope not" after just reading your first line, but having read the reasons I see a great deal of merit in what you say. Basically, more user choice!

Am I converted? Well not yet, but I am now thinking about those possibilities. OK, you've mentioned some positives, how about some negatives;
  • Theft. How do you prevent those who believe they deserve the tablet more than the next pax?? The FAs already have enough to do without playing store security as well.....
  • Damage from dropping etc..
  • Screen size. I hope they think of something bigger than a piddling 10" screen.
I bet if Noobs points (above) were pointed out in the poll thread, the Wifi option would have a greater response, provided they don't "expect" all pax to bring their own. I hate having to lug around a laptop and I'm not yet convinced to buy an iPad and I'm as sure as sh#te I don't want to watch movies on my iPhone!

Just to hark back to a previous discussion.

Noob was very much forward thinking with his (her??) judgments.......a pity DJ weren't.

OK, now we know (at least I think we know) that DJ will offer tablets to J, but scum class BYO. As one of the scum class, I've grasped this challenge with both hairy knuckles and lashed out and bought an alternative (correction........a possible alternative, hopefully).

I raised on AFF some time ago, the option of wide screen glasses (buggered if I know which thread) and as I received no endosements (glowing or otherwise) I've lashed out (albeit without the Missus knowing) and bought a set.

Here is my future (and current) hedge against airline IFE stinginess which, if they ever happen to arrive in the post, I'm more than happy to review and/or let you fellow Surfers Christmas in June AFFers, test drive!.........

Perhaps I should also mention, I have no commercial interest in this product.........in fact, I'm not yet even sure I have any interest (full stop) in this product. Time will indeed tell.

Thank you once again for your praise one male to another ;)

The only issue with the glasses is you wouldn't be able to multitask whilst watching e.g. eat and drink without making a mess etc.

Sorry about the gender query(??) Noob.....on forums, we usually don't really know for sure. No offence intended.

As for multitasking.......my good wife (debatable point) always maintains men cannot multitask at all. In your given example, I can happily prove her entirely wrong.......I can watch TV and drop food and drink all over me simultaneously without hesitation.......male superiority rules agian!

Don't be sorry, nothing you said warranted offense :)

Haha and so true regarding multitasking

Was there not something about the new Samsung Tablets in this month's Voyeur?

Scratch that, there actually was. Found it on the online copy:

I for one, am yet to see them.

When it says high definition, does it mean they’ll have 720p content?

Not a fan of anything that needs to be distributed after take-off and returned before landing. That said QF will do roughly the same when Q Streaming is introduced on all aircraft, but having had a gate to gate experience TSV-BNE recently, I can’t see why I’d want to go backwards in the future.
