Hi AFF Team,

I read in the papers this weekend that the issue of earning QFF status credits on Emirates flights has not yet been decided.
There is also an obvious absence of any status point discussion in the FAQ's Qantas released.

That is going to be a massive deal maker or breaker for me (and I suspect several others) - if we don't earn status credits flying on Emirates (and there is now no Qantas-metal option for most (?all) flights to Europe) I for one am definately jumping ship.

Has anyone heard anything about the status credit issues?

Cheers.

Ps. Apologies if this has been discussed in another thread - I didn't have time to look through 98 pages :)

You will earn SCs on Emirates flights and it should in theory be no different to any other carrier that earns SCs now based on the Status Credit earn table.

The only thing that may happen is some discount economy booking classes on Emirates may not earn SCs. I suspect all details will be released closer to the date.

While not mentioned in the FAQ .PDF, Red Roo has specifically posted that SC's will be earned on QF flight numbers (in reference to codeshares on EK metal).

I have come across no definitive indication of any SC earn on EK flight numbers (either way).

I'm not holding my breath sadly for EK numbered flights (clearly QF numbered codeshares will).

Id love to earn SC on EK numbered flights, and thus having EK as an alternative option to some ports of call, but I doubt it.

Perfect example is MU, with whom Qantas has a very big business arrangement and ventures with, but you can only earn FFs with, not SCs.

So unless it is OW or an airline where QF has a piece of the financial pie (JQ,3K,FJ), I doubt it will happen.

It is a shame since it makes more sense then say S7 which by virtue of being OW partner allows SC to be earned, even though there is no real partnership at all.

There are still going to be QF A380s flying to Europe via DXB from MEL and SYD if this deal is approved, just instead of flying via SIN, so there will still be options to earn SCs on those QF metal flights through to Europe... Be more difficult if your flying from PER or other ports where u will probably be forced to fly the first leg to DXB on EK metal...

MY only other comment to add is the stated guiding principal

In our discussions Tim and I (Alan Joyce)came up with a guiding principle for this partnership:
Treat each other’s customers as your own.

Our two airlines will, of course, retain their distinct style and identity, but we will
match key customer benefits.

I would be almost certain this will mean codeshare flights will get SCs, I am less certain that other EK flights will.

I think otherwise lets leave this thread as it sits, and continue discussion on the much longer thread, unless RedRoo would like to provide a clarification here.

I'm looking forward to it. Emrati subsidisation combined with Qantas management incompetence. Great combination. Look forward to 2015, when Qantas declares the Asian region as too crowded with OneWorld partners, and opts to join with Emirates into another Alliance - Qaemirnitaes

As others have said you'll earn SCs on a QF code share on Emirates.

But earning SCs on EK flight numbers is yet to be worked out. Although I have a feeling it might be a Oneworld rule. It seems to be for OW FF programs the only flights that count towards status are on OW carriers or subsidiaries of the airline. Might be case of wait and see.

That's definitely not the case. Air Pacific earns SCs for QF, and is not in OW.

Its Oneworld or it's partly owned subsidiaries, there are no SC airlines that don't fit into those two cats.

Although as Robert QLD points out, QF has a financial interest in FJ, which he thinks will be needed in order to earn SC on non-OW partner flights.

Personally, I really hope SCs will be earnt on all EK flights, especially those into Africa and (non-DXB) Middle East destinations.

Of interest: Alaska Airlines' flights earn "elite qualifying points/miles" in AAdvantage https://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/earnMiles/travel/airlines/alaska.jsp and it is not a member of oneworld nor does AMR have a financial interest in the airline Alaska Air Group, Inc. (ALK) Institutional Ownership & Holdings - NASDAQ.com (But then perhaps it does not operate in competition to any other oneworld airline on its routes?)
Travel on AA or BA flight numbers are different - there are no caveats; if it's for travel on an AA or BA flight number in an eligible class then it earns both QFF points and SC's (irrespective of the metal).

AB, FJ, CX/KA, IB, JL, RJ, S7 & LA all have the codeshare on oneworld metal caveat.

FJ has a codeshare on Qantas metal caveat.

Regardless of AA marketed non-metal earn in QFF, the important observation is that -

the AS code (on AS metal) earns EQM/EQP in AAdvantage (precedent with a oneworld member airline).

Which might be argued, could be considered the same as the EK code (on EK metal) earning status credits in QFF!

The position that a oneworld member airlines' ff program, must have status earn limited to other oneworld members or direct subsidiaries/investments appears incorrect in the AS/AAdvantage case.

... and in the BA case ...

The majority of Emirates flights depart from Dubai. Their only routes that are not ex-Dubai are Male-Colombo, Hong Kong-Bangkok, Colombo-Singapore, Malta-Larnaca, Buenos-Aires-Rio, Melbourne-KL, Melbourne-Singapore, Sydney-Bangkok, Brisbane-Singapore, Auckland-MEL/SYD/BNE, and Christchurch-Sydney (this is less than 10% of their routes).

I'd suggest that for the routes out of Australia that QF shares with Emirates (those mentioned above, plus flights to Dubai), they'd be mad not to offer SCs on Emirates. This would be similar to offering same points earn rates when flying BA on the routes they share(d) with QF. Or, at least offer codeshares on all those routes to at least enable pax to book an SC-earning flight.

Also considering they've indicated that they will "replicate" each others offering, I think potentially this could include status credits. If Qantas is looking to bring in things like chauffeur-drive, surely(?) they'd realise most people would want Status Credits on Emirates flights before that type of thing.

And remember that status is now beyond One World. QF members status will be recognised when flying Emirates (as a non-OW member), so surely flying Emirates should help to earn that status (and vice versa with Skywards members flying Qantas). Would Emirates really want to give people benefits if the majority of that status was earned on BA, CX, AA, etc? I think they'd prefer people to earn it on their flights, and is in their best interest to allow QF to award SC's for Emirates flights. That's how Virgin's program works with all it's partners (although of course they don't have an alliance and it's rules getting in the way). Even the wording of QF's announcement indicated that they are suggesting airline industry has moved beyond alliances like OW and *A (sounds like they're taking a few words from JB's notebook).

I just noticed this post on Australian Business Traveller - Qantas frequent flyers to earn status credits on Emirates flights - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

In the article, it states that QFF members will earn Mile and Status Credits on all EK flights with a QF codeshare, but only miles on EK flights without a codeshare.
"a Qantas spokesman confirmed the status credits will be earned on the proviso that travel is booked under the Qantas QF flight number rather than Emirates' EK flight number – in effect, meaning that you're buying your ticket from Qantas.

If your booking is made under the EK flight number you'll still earn frequent flyer points for the journey, but not status credits."

I just hope that we end up with an extensive list of QF flight numbers on EK flights - especially to Africa, Middle East and Europe....
