What's your Uber experience?

It's around 20% of the cost of service. There is a tipping function inbuilt into the app and allows you to specify country. Clearly the drivers don't know if you've used that function.

Where do I find this "tipping function" ?

Thanks. I was trying to use the Google approach but nothing matched what my app shows. I did find a page on tipping however. It says it is not included nor possible except with Uber Taxi (whatever that is), however we are free to tip the driver personally if we like.

I must be a nice bloke!

As a driver, I give every passenger five stars. Someone has got to be a real dick to earn anything less from me.

Realistically, passengers don't have to do anything besides climb in the car and get out again. Just do that and it's five stars.

Drivers have to actually do stuff, like having a clean car, follow the route, drive safely and so on.

I abhor the tipping system in the SA. I'll do it, because I know that it's part of their income, but I think it sucks.

Uber should pay their American drivers a fair rate so they don't have to ask for or encourage tips. So now we get bloody-minded drivers systematically down-rating passengers, and Uber doesn't care because it's not money out of their pocket.

Is that "noise" from the US or here in Oz? If it's here, I'd be against a tipping fee to supplement income. As far as I'm concerned, a tip is for exceptional service, not to supplement income and paid to all regardless of attitude, knowledge and service. The US has coughised the tipping concept into that very model, which does nothing to encourage good, quality service in the service industry.

Tipping in Australia may be for exceptional service. In the US and other countries it's about making minimum wage

I was reading some Uber driver threads and they were discussing tipping signs, where to buy, neon/lighted ones as people didnt see the signs at night.

This is also where I read that they rate down for lack of tip.

We only use Uber when OS.

Yes, I realise that. It's why I said I'd be against it here (in Australia). The last thing I'd be promoting is an income top up system of tipping being snuck in the back door in this country. I do tip however, but only for very good service and it is rarely greater than 10%. I have never yet tipped an Uber driver and I doubt I would, simply because part of the benefit of Uber is not having to be fiddling around with cash or cards.

Maybe Skyring will share some knowledge on the net return to an Australian Uber driver, and I suspect then that a tip / gratuity isn't such a bad idea. The general consensus is that Uber is a superior service compared to taxis, yet a taxi will cost you roughly half to 3 times the same trip in an Uber.

It's a bad idea to willingly allow tipping to prop up below minimum wage rorting. If Uber is not returning enough to drivers to cover a wage and all their on costs, then people will stop driving. All the drivers I've spoken to are pretty much of the same opinion, that being that one won't make millions but it stacks up for what they want it for. You can't compare it to taxis as that system was/is an antiquated rort in itself.

I think Skyring has hinted at the quantum of "great money" as uber suggests uber partners may make. The consensus is that you can't make a reasonable livIng out of it.

I wonder how superior it will be when more taxi drivers jump over to uber (and carrying over some of their legacy taxi culture)

I suspect some drivers give you a poor rating if you take a really short ride.
