What's your Uber experience?

i was interested to see a billboard at LAX, just near where the Uber drivers have to pool behind the Sheraton; advertising from a law firm claiming that drivers can claim while they wait for a fare. I forgot to take a photo of it but it was quite large and prominent.

Claim what?

something about the waiting time whilst they are in the holding area i think. I'm back there in three weeks so i will try to take a picture. It was one of those large billboards.

Funny thing about vultures, they don't mind others paying for their meal! I mean, let's face it, for every "claim" there is a winner and a loser ... the winner is the vulture, the loser is the claimant.

I'm afraid that I still use private car/limo services to and from Mel. I use a local person and the fare is a known quantity before I get in. I am still unsure about using people in private cars. I prefer "formal" arrangements ie taxis or limo services.

Uber? I'll tell you how good Uber is. Sat night - we need to get from Parkdale to St Kilda:

Me: 'Darlin' we need to ne there at 19:15 so I'll call a taxi at 18:30'

The Ette: 'Why don't we take Uber?'

Me: OK - check Uber - 1.8 surge - coughk that. Order taxi through Silver Top app and get brand new Silver Service Caprice in 5 mins - $46.00 to Topolinos

For return journey after dinner with a group and all the goodbyes at 23:00

Me: 'Ill try Uber and see what the surge is now'.

The Ette: 'Just hail a taxi in Fitzroy St because surge probably >2 now'

Me: 'Let me try - search Uber app - no surge - price $28 to $36 - car available in 2 mins - hey Ette no surge and car here in 2 mins'

2mins later phone goes:

Uber Driver: 'Hey Cruiser did you order Uber? Is that you standing outside Topolinos?'

Me: 'Yes where are you?'

Uber Driver: 'I am opposite Topolinos in front of Tolarno Hotel - I don't really know how to turn around to pick you up on that side can you please cross the street'

Me: 'I can't see any car outside Tolarno - all I can see is a black ute'

Uber Driver: 'Yes that is me - I am in a black ute!'

Good grief - a UTE - a f'ing UTE - what a disgrace! Forget it fella - we will take a taxi instead!!

Yep dual cab - Nissan Navara - rear seats like marble slabs - leg space that suits pygmies only - what a disgrace!

You do realize when you order an uber, it does actually tell you what car they have. If it's not the car you want, cancel it and try again.

Next time order SELECT. You still pay less or the same as a yellow taxi. I've been using that and I get a combination of VHA Caprice/E Class, Q5/7's. Definitely not Utes or microboxes.

After some positive Uber experiences in the US and Singapore, I have been bought down to earth in Malaysia, where I am based for a month on a project. Their local competitor GRAB is not much better. Given the variable quality and the 'meter is broken' mentality towards tourists of the local Taxi companies (blue cabs excepted), I thought Uber would be perfect for this city.

However, I have had drivers get within a block of me (standing on the side of the road) then turn a corner and head the other way, drivers who cannot do a legal U-Turn to find you, drivers who obviously have never read a map, cars that look like they have just started the previous job when they accept yours (given that they start 5 mins away and then are strangely 18 mins away before turning around). Not to mention some of the smallest UberX cars you have ever seen - you would not want to be more than one person with no luggage. I've had to cancel a few and had drivers cancel on me after 15 mins of frustration. At least Uber has refunded the cancellation fee with no issue.

I'm here for another week so I hope the situation improves. I do acknowledge that Malaysian roads can get quickly blocked and there are roads where it is difficult to turn around.

Stopping one block away is a common scam. They are trying to get you to cancel the booking as you would then be charged a cancellation fee. Malaysia is the only place where I got hit by that scam... should report them and rate them a 0. Just be careful about the cancellation fee and make sure it does not get charged a few hours or a day later.

Can you tell me how to report a driver? I cannot see how to do that on the App and how can you rate them 0 if you do not take the journey with them? I've not had a cancellation fee problem yet but will keep an eye out.

I believe your are correct that you cannot rate a driver you haven't ridden with, but you can certainly send feedback to uber

That assumes the person booking the uber even knows what the type of car is.

Recently back from London and used Uber a few times (although for airport shuttles booked Addison Lee as needed their 'cycle cab' for my bike, good service). One thing I noticed was that if I started the Uber app while sitting in a pub and then walked a block to the main road to initiate the booking, they Uber would turn up at the pub. This happened a number of times and had me wondering if the geolocater simply tags where you were when opening the app. Copped the 'stop short and cancel' routine as well. Rode far more buses than Ubers and as usual, excellent service from the big red Routemasters.
