The same way AirTags work I believe - they broadcast via BLE, if other iOS devices can receive the message they report that location back to Apple servers

I don't believe flight mode turns BT off anymore due to the rise of Bluetooth headphones - certainly Android 12 doesn't. Panasonic have even released an IFE solution which incorporates Bluetooth connectivity, I believe it's already in use in some of the United fleet

Android 12 on my Samsung S10 and MrsDave6's S20 certainly does turn bluetooth off. You can obviously turn it on with the other radios off, but clicking flight mode turns all radios off.

My Bose headphones have always connected via Bluetooth with flight mode on (I don’t have to turn it back on). And Wi-Fi stays on because it connects to the plane for data or entertainment connection.

I thought flight mode just stoped the cellular (sim) side of the phone transmitting.

By contrast years ago an a Sri Lankan Airlines flight I left my passport in the seat pocket. We were transferred to the Colombo terminal by bus because due to heightened security the air bridges were not operating. In all a 15 minute exercise. As I got off the bus outside the terminal a flight attendant was waiting to hand me my passport wallet. I had not yet realised it was left on the plane.

With the amount of time spent in the air, it is reckoned that the iPhone may have theoretically achieved a "silver" level of rewards with the airline in its own right.
This is technically incorrect, since if we allow for the phone to be ticketed in discounted business it should earn 280 status credits on the SYD > HNL "domestic" flight and 160 status credits on the SYD > AKL "domestic" flight. Depending on how many times you count the SYD > AKL trip the phone would've been raking in anywhere from 600 status credits (the 2 AKL turns and HNL turn) or 760 status credits (the 3 AKL turns including the initial one and the HNL turn). The former would certainly re-qualify you for QF Gold status whilst the latter would qualify you for QF Gold status having had no status.

All this talk of earning status credits is barking up the wrong tree. As no tickets were purchased, the phone owes Qantas for its travels and must pay up. Qantas will no doubt charge the owner's QFF account at the "points plus pay" rate.

I doubt Uncle Alan will pursue it, he's got more important fires to put out than an iPhone becoming a Frank Abegnale. No doubt revenue management will sent the iPhone a notice in 8 years time! 😅
