Where are the awards?

Certainly premium award availability is challenging. I was noticing quite a bit prior to the border walls coming down but as soon as it looked like we could travel again that pent up demand snaffled a lot - primarily seats up front (as discussed in other threads).

Qantas does indeed claim 50% more reward seats.

With that I guess there's two caveats-
1 - that's on QF metal
2 - They are operating far fewer international flights

I think you will find its because most people have probably taken the seats already. The time to book was when the schedules were loaded, not now after the announcement. I've spent the last few months booking all my 2022 and pretty much been able to get the exact dates and class I wanted on usually very in demand routes such as to LAX and LHR. When the schedules were loaded over the last few months, there was amazing availability but I've been watching it be snapped up over the last couple months as confidence resumes.

Overall though I think its been pretty good. Just yesterday I was able to snag SYD > LAX in J on QF in May on the exact date I wanted, that was pure luck though, I was on the phone to a QF agent when the EF alert came through and I was able to book it immediately.

Check JAL, been seeing plenty of availability with them.

As new flights are loaded as demand slowly picks up I think you should see availability increase. I think you need to keep an eye on when the new flights/ routes/ airlines/ aircraft upgrades (777 to a380) are loaded and that's when a wave of availability shows up. Good luck!

Can you set up alerts for reward flight seats? You mentioned an EF alert (when you were on the phone to Qantas?)

I have seen this several times when looking for options into Europe next year. Every day appears to have J availability at 159,000 points but down below nothing. Does anyone know why this is?

Press 'Rewards Only'.
I normally do that and it brings up the economy fares and some J seats at higher points. It still doesn't explain why it shows "Lowest" as 159,000 point seats above and nothing under "Business Classic Reward" though.

Could it be that you have a filter set to only one stop despite the fact that it's virtually impossible to go anywhere in Europe from Australia in just one stop? The reason I ask is I do indeed see classic business availability on the 3rd with 2 stops:

I agree that there are no J seats for 159,000 points on the date you've selected (or around it - 1 March no longer shows that price but 2 March does), even if you select "Rewards Only" as is necessary and scroll down the page.

Wouldn't be the first time something was broken on the QF website...
