After following this thread in the QF forum here on AFF last week:

...i wanted to share what I saw on my VA flight yesterday, incidentally, between the same city pair MEL/CBR.
At the gate, most pax had taken seats but a few stragglers still getting themselves sorted, an elderly lady stopped our FA in the aisle and asked "do you know where my bag is?". The FA was soon joined by her colleague first searching the overheads, then asking if she left it in the lounge (ping, the linked thread above). A helpful pax nearby said he had seen the elderly lady sitting at the cafe and offered to go and get the bag, but the FAs organised for ground staff to go and look. All the while the whole crew was very friendly and helpful. We were prob delayed by about 3-4 minutes.
Oh, did they find the bag? Well when the FA returned to the elderly lady to politely explain that ground staff couldnt find it but the plane was ready to leave, the lady said "but it was too big, they took it off me when I got on". It dawned on our helpful FA that ground staff had gate-checked the lady's oversize hand luggage. To their credit, it must have been frustrating, the FAs stayed friendly and joked about the misunderstanding.
An interesting contrast to the CmdrWegde experience.
