It’s the big things…

Drawing on the history of such globally significant ‘lines’ such as the Mason-Dixon Line; Maginot Line; Piccadilly Line and even The Equator, what I really want to know is, what is the extent of the ‘hotel-supplied dental kit line’?

Indonesia supplies them in hotels, so too does Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines? Australia and NZ don’t. How about Thailand, India, China? Where does this line extend? Is it only SEAsia or broader? 🤷‍♂️

That query of course leads to the next question of why are dental kits supplied only within this region, or at all? If it is indeed only SEAsia, why don’t residents of these countries travel with their toothbrush? Do they not travel with a toiletries kit at all?

I gots to know!

Dental kits are usually supplied in Japan too, particularly but not exclusively in business hotels. I understood it was because the people who stay in business hotels often do so because they have missed the last train home, so they don't have a toothbrush with them. But that doesn't explain why they are provided in non-business hotels.

I share your curiosity @Scarlett!

This has always bugged me. Why do we get almost everything we need for our daily ablutions, but no dental kit?

Tbh, I don't recall ever having seen a dental kit except as part of the in flight amenities, and in some lounge bathrooms. Since I travel a lot, and not always by plane, I grab a handful of sample toothpastes every dentist visit.

Edit: not true. I do recall a few in cardboard boxes in some asian hotels, now that I actually exercise my failing memory.

I think you will find most hotels can provide a dental kit. In Asia they tend to put it in the bathroom, in Australia/EU/UK/USA generally available on request if not already in the room.

When dental kits, sewing kits, shower caps, combs etc are on display in the room they are more likley to be taken even if not used/needed. Having people need to ask/request them, limits expense for the hotels.

I'm sorry, I was taught to never to leave home without my toothbrush. Sort of like always packing a towel.
I've never packed a towel. Have occasionally forgotten the toothbrush.

And of course if you're fortunate to meet a friend while travelling, well it's always good manners to give her a fresh toothbrush in the morning.

The toothbrushes are usually pretty poor quality. I often rely on the toothpaste though when travelling overseas HLO. One less thing to put in the clear plastic bag at security checks.

Also can confirm 5* hotels in India provide them.

I've never had trouble getting a kit, even if thereis not one in the room. Downside, the toothbrushes are not exactly gentle on my gums :)

Friends like that have benefits.;)
Sometimes pleasant and unpleasant.

Such as the friend a work colleague met whilst in Vegas. She didn’t use a toothbrush in the morning but did depart with his wallet and iPad.

Interesting police report: what was the persons name? Ummm, don’t know.

No further details of this story can be supplied because what happens in Vegas…

I can confirm that the CHC Breakfree Hotel (Accor) doesn’t have emergency toothbrushes, razors etc at the front desk. SYD+1 left home without a toothbrush. I said, no worries. They’ll have something at the front desk until you can buy another. Nup.

Forgetting a razor is a PITA and most likely to occur when travelling outbound on a morning. Shave and forget to place in travel toiletries bag. Instead put it where you normally put it when at home…. I don’t have that problem with toothbrushes - I don’t travel with my electric toothbrush but I know a lot of people who do…

My teeth never feel clean if a manual toothbrush is used. At home use a rechargeable electric toothbrush, when travelling i have a battery operated version.

When BA didnt deliver my bag for 24hrs i used the freebie from the Qantas amenity kit, but IHG Indigo hotel in Edinburgh where I was staying also had free kits available on request.
