Where to get the best scallop pies in Tassie

Though there is the good Deli-Delish in between.Possible they might sell pies though.No Scallop pies at Fish on the Edge.Just good scallops.
Mmm, you are right- I forgot about Delish :oops:
 
I was just going to say that last week I asked the RallySafe people in Ulverstone where to get a good pie and was told Crustys have the best scallop pies in Ulverstone, the one I had was pretty darn good and their coffee is ok as well!

Their coffee is pretty good - I call in for one on my way to work most days :oops:

After all this talk about scallop pies they were on my radar and I saw award that I've never noticed previously - it doesn't say what award they won but on asking they tell me it was for best curried scallop pie at the Tassie Scallop Fiesta

The quest continues.I decided to try a commercial pie.Banjos advertise them here so I gave it a try.not a classic pie.Little curry powder plus a lot of veggies.4 scallops and a little overdone.Don't bother with this one.

Next was lunch at the Scottsdale bakery at Newnham on the old Georgetown road.

Sauce too thick but the right amount of curry powder and 5 nice scallops.A pas.They advertise their famous Cornish pasty.

Just like Cornwall and I didn't like those ones.Pastry thick and filling bland.The sparrows had a good feed.
Finally on this lot the offering from the Trevallyn Gourmet bakery on Gorge rd.

Nice flaky pastry,5 juicy scallops,sauce the right flavour but a little thick so not quite the Tinnies quality but cheaper and so reasonable value.

Just a couple more.In 2 weeks I will get back to my quest.
First the Trevallyn Gourmet Bakery.I was advised to get there early so this was for breakfast.

Nice flaky pastry,sauce a perfect consistency but probably just a tad more curry powder would have been better.5 beautiful large scallops.Very good and I rate it just behind the Tinnies pie but it is $2 cheaper so possibly better value.
I the went hunting for cherries and for lunch I ended up at the Bizy Bee bakery at Invermay.The bakery is connected to the Bizy Bee takeaway which doesn't have these pies.

Beautiful taste to sauce and 7 good scallops.But 2 major problems.First the pastry is very thin.Second the sauce is too runny.As you can see I am eating this in the car as it was now raining heavily.Soon after that second pic the pie split in half.A real mess so if you want to have this pie eat it off a plate and have a spoon handy.Pity.
 
Dr Ron, hubby was thrilled with the pie at Ashgrove Cheese at Elizabeth Town yesterday. No scallops but he had the chunky beef with relish. He enjoyed hearing about your quest for us :)

So first not a pie-a few breadcrumbs on top of the filling.As for the filling-way to much curry powder overwhelming the 8 scallops.Also the filling was very thick and not pleasant.$22.Other dishes here are good.Just avoid the scallop pie.

Next the restaurant at the Tamar Cove motel at Beauty Point.

I had a scallop pie from Banjos the other days (chain of bakeries). Was both pleasantly surprised and a bit disappointed.

Better presented than your one above, drron; I think eight big scallops, with roe, and sauce of a good consistency. But the mixture hadn't been thoroughly mixed in respect of the curry. Some white patches in the pie. I'll have to give them another try :).

13 perfectly cooked scallops of a good size.

The scallops look a bit angular - 13 pieces, maybe? Hard to get 13 whole scallops in a pie that size.

WelI just have given them another try and it's a big fail. Dryish, stodgy interior with poor mixing again.

Rated "awful". :(
 
Cant imagine tom sauce on a scallop pie - it would clash with the curry flavor.
 
Well I am back in Tassie so time to renew my obsession with scallop pies.But first I missed posting the last 2 examples from my time in Lonnie.first was the Bridport bakery.not a classic as theirs has a mornay sauce but some will prefer this.

Sauce a little thick but 8 beautiful scallops.I did enjoy this one.
The last of that trip was at the Ingleside Bakery at Evandale.Again a brekkie pie.

A classic pie.8 good sized scallops with a pretty good sauce.
 
Now to the present.Had a scallop pie for lunch this last 3 days.First up was the Latrobe bakery in the main street.

Nice sauce and scallops but only 4 of them.$7.60.
Next from the cafe just inside the Woolworths complex,Devonport.The cheapest at $6.90.

However although 8 scallops they were small and obviously frozen.You can see the sauce around the edges and a clump of scallops in the middle surrounded by water.Not recommended.
Today it was from hennessy bakery also in the Woolworths complex.The dearest ar $8.95.

But this was the best.6 large scallops and obviously fresh scallops from victoria.Nice sauce consistency though a little spicy.Fine by me but some mightn't like it.
 
Back to the quest.The first weekend I made a trip to Ulverstone to check out the offerings from Crusty's bakery.

Not too bad but pastry quite thich and filling pale.Six reasonable sized scallops
Across the road is Oliver's bakery.
160360.160361.
Again thick pastry but flakier.Lovely filling and 8 larger scallops.It was also a dollar cheaper than the Crusty's offering so Oliver's is my pick in Ulverstone.
