This week and my final 2 pies for this trip. The first from Wright's bakery,East Devonport.Just near the ferry terminal.
160362.160363.
Pretty good.Nice pastry, slightly spicier filling and 7 reasonable scallops.
The last example is from the Oliver's bakery in Latrobe.

Very good.8 large scallops. In fact the pie was basically scallops with just a little filling. So finish on a good note.

What an excellent thread. I was converted to Tasmanian scallop pies in the 90's, when I used to visit the State. The Dover bakery simply couldn't be driven past.
For the last nineteen years, I've been a resident and haven't had a scallop pie in ages. Too many expensive disappointments. This thread has inspired me to return to an old favourite. Thank you.

I did actually get to have another 2 pies on the last weekend of my stay.I was on call but it was very quiet.I went to Ashgroves but only a little further is the ETC bakery on the Bass highway and they do have scallop pies.

A very yellow colour to the filling suggests it is not a classical recipe. The crust is also on the thin side so had to be very careful eating it.but 7 nice scallops and nice taste.Probably better to eat in with this one though.
The other one was from the All Things Nice bakery,East Devonport.I had called in 4 times as their pie is recommended by locals.I gave it one more try and they had one scallop pie left. One of the smallest but also cheap at $6.50.

Nice flaky pastry and the easiest to eat with your hands.classic filling and 7 scallops-3 were quite small. But nice scallops and one of the better value pies.
Today I went out to Sheffield and had a scallop pie for lunch at Bossinis Bakehouse.Very popular.
161584.161585.
One of the larger pies and $8 to eat in.A little light on the curry powder but some will prefer it that way.8 nice sized scallops and so good value and one of my favourites.
It was the beginning of Mural Fest so I intended to stay on and watch some of the artists at work.however the temperature dropped, the wind got stronger and the rain began. It was also snowing about 40 km away.the artists retreated so I went back to Latrobe. stopping at Spreyton cider to pick up a 4 pack.If you like ciders this is a good place to stop.

Thanks to this thread, I tried one from the Brighton bakery last week. It was my first scallop pie for a while and was also a grab and run, but I enjoyed it. I thought drron had included this one in his review but I see it hasn't made the list yet. If I'm down that way again, I'll try and allow some time for a critical assessment. In the meanwhile, I'd better try a Tinnies as they appear to be the current benchmark.

I work in the North or Northwest so don't get to try most of the offerings in the South.

I'm the same, so I've enjoyed your reviews of the local offerings and have every intent of following your epicurial footsteps. I occasionally get south and the need for lunch coincided with proximity to Brighton, hence the commencement of my re-engagement with a past favourite.

In the warmer months some are from Victoria. If they were Tasmanian they probably have been frozen

I'm not silly Steady.I spent one winter in Burnie so in July I am working in Townsville again.:D

And not quite on topic but I found a scallop pie here on the Sunshine Coast.Brumby's bakery at the Plaza Maroochydore.
Basically the same as the one I had at Brumby's Kings Meadow. Not classical as it has carrots, peas and corn.Sauce a little too runny and quite mild.Nice flaky pastry. The scallops though were better than Brumys Tassie offerings.7 reasonably sized scallops cooked perfectly.$9.50.
Sorry didn't have my camera with me.

Ulverstone is officially home to the best scallop mornay pies in Tasmania with Olivers Bakery and Cafe winning gold at the 2020 Tassie Scallop Fiesta.
The Advocate

Didn't try the pies there, we had toasties. :(

I did have several at Crusty's and thought they were good, even more reason to get back after the covid cough.

Seems like I agree with the judges. From 18/12 ago.

"Again thick pastry but flakier.Lovely filling and 8 larger scallops. It was also a dollar cheaper than the Crusty's offering so Oliver's is my pick in Ulverstone. "

I had never heard of scallop pie before, but all these posts are making me desperate to try it!

With apologies for the poor quality pics...

Scallop pie from the Richmond Bakery last week. Not normally a huge fan of scallops this way but tried this (and other pastries) out for a brunch/snack.

Pretty good for around $8. Solid pastry which I like. About 5 small scallops and 3 medium size scallops inside. All tender. Sauce a bit thick.

They have many other pies and pastries. The chicken and camembert a standout.

Fortunately have had better scallops since!
