Just did some googling and according to Crikey Ansett launched their programme Aug 91 and QF "cobbled togethe" theirs in a hurry in response. The was a TAA "Captains Club" prior to QF Takeover. While my card says Apr 91 my reassessment occurs 31 Aug annually.
Captains Club/Lounge was QF before the merger. TAA became Australian Airlines (TN) and they had Flight Desk memberships prior to the merger. Both Captains Club/Lounge and Flight Deck had their own membership numbers, but neither had the concept of Frequent Flyer accruals at that time. Membership numbers from QF's Captains Club/Lounge and TN's Flight Desk carried over to Qantas Frequent Flyer program when it commenced.

Curious, this.
My own QF joining year is 1986 - but my QFF number, also four digits, as is yours Maroonone, is 9xx_.
My partner's starting year is also 1986 and his QFF number is 4xx_. (He is not a member of AFF, so not in the contest.)
I seem to recall that, in one of the earlier threads, there were some 5xx_ numbers. Will have to do another search and see if there were join years specified.
So how strange that a 1991 joining date has 5xx_ number attached?

Okay, I "mis-remembered".
Here is Lindsay Wilson's 2010 summary:

<First: cosi's Dad, three digits starting with 1XX, date??

Second: Lindsay's uncle, 0053xx, date ??

Third: Ikara, 0008xx_, January 1983

Fourth: ozbeachbabe, 0008xx_, September 1986

Fifth: Lindsay, 0056xx_, February 1989>

But, again, can that be right?
Ikara: Your number is 8xx_, with a joining date of 1983?
Yet Ozbeachbabe is 8xx_ from 1996, mine is 9xx_ from 1986 and my partner is 4xx_ from 1986.

Any additional data points for that period to help us here?

Curiouser and curiouser, with apologies to Alice's (non-flying) adventures.:)

My QFF membership came via Flight Deck. I can't recall if the membership number changed though.

Ah, a question for the experts out there, which may throw some light on the mystery:
Is there a difference in cards/numbers for Qantas Club membership?
Ikara, am I interpreting correctly that yours is a QC card?

It's a Lifetime Gold card.

How uninformed am I?!
I have LTG myself but it has never come into play, to date, and I've never seen the card. Thanks for the update.

You will have to let your WP lapse so you can enjoy the benefits of LTG :-))

I'll follow your lead, when you forego Plat for your QP (Life). But first, we should meet for a F Lounge Champagne?:p

That sounds like a plan , I shall muster the forces and see what can be arranged.

After reading this thread I can't work the membership number out either. I was a member of Flight Deck, and a Life Member of Golden Wings for many years. I was with QF for years before joining the QP as Life Member in 1993, and my QF FF is 154xx_x. I don't think even a constipated mathematician could work it out :mrgreen:

Agree, we have uncovered curious anomalies.

1986 seems straightforward, with a few data points:
* My +1 (not an AFF member) - Join date July 1986 - QFF 4xx_
* Ozbeachbabe - Join date September 1986 - QFF 8xx_
* Pagingjoan - Join date September 1986 - QFF 9xx_

But Ikara's join date is three years earlier, yet has 8xx_.

In terms of earliest joining date, we seem to have a winner. For lowest number, I guess Ozbeacbabe and Ikara would have to reveal the value of the second X. They may not want to do that online - but maybe, for a chance for the fabulous prize, they could compare notes offline and let us know the outcome? :)

Keep in mind that back in the day the sign up process was different to now. Forms to fill in with a pen, pre printed temporary cards. The numbers were not issued exactly in sequence as it depended on which form you got.
