Who is going to the Qantas AGM in 2023?

My take:

A well managed in-person and on-line AGM.

Chair dominated, as expected - but his continually just looking down at his hands when talking was pretty off-putting. I could say it looked shifty, but that would be unkind.

Hudson performed much better and got more confident as the meeting proceeded - she always looked out at the audience. Some of her 'we are now focussed on customers' lines wore a bit thin.

Some really coughpy questions from the floor - many speeches, partic from one guy. Chair cut him off once, should have done it more. Only a couple of genuinely penetrating (ie difficult) questions. 'Shareholder activist' Stephen Mayne asked some good ones, on-line but mostly batted away by the Chair.

Surprised Todd Sampson got re-elected, based on what the proxy advisors were saying beforehand, but a 1/3 vote against still significant.

The big one - remuneration report - was blown out of the water, 90% against (interested parties not voting). A way for major shareholders to 'send a message' without putting a hole in the hull (to mix metaphors). I don't expect there will be a second strike next year.

Issue of clawback of AH bonus still deferred.

Final voting tallies will be reported to ASX this afternoon. The meeting will appear as a web cast reply here in due course: Qantas Investors | Investor Centre

One thing that they emphasise is that Qantas have people from customer care (presumably the good ones, from Hobart) at the AGM to deal with individual travel issues.

I wonder if you could rock up to the AGM and start requesting the release of some award seats ...

Unfortunately the guy that asked the question screwed it up, by wrongly stating the timing of AJ selling his shares and the ACCC investigation, so the Chair was easily able to bat it down. Should have asked about the timing of AJ selling his shares (which Chair approval) and when the company became aware of the ACCC investigation (notices to disclose etc). From memory, the questioner also made statements about Board's ethics (not appropriate) and implying an illegality Vs asking if such-and-such was ethical or legal.

It's a bit like dictatorship, then, isn't it if the Chair does not allow the directors to engage with the meeting directly but talks on their behalf. And leaning on manuscripted (non)responses looks like being out of touch and not really knowing the business well enough to discuss it directly. I feel lucky to not be a shareholder...

That's the thing. Except when reading out the resolutions and formal stuff, I don't think he was reading from notes (although he did have a binder there). Just looking down. When he did look out, there wasn't any shielding of eyes from light glare. Vanessa Hudson was a much better 'performer' (and I mean that as a compliment), looking out as she spoke and addressing everybody.

Question re cleanliness of QF terminal at MEL domestic

Has always been appalling, the reason I joined Qantas Club way back when was to ensure access to a clean toilet at MEL, the terminal ones had no hook on back of door for a bag and looked like they were never cleaned. Doesn't seem to have improved in last 10 years.

So in summary, the AGM was just a hide under the desk event and a waste of time for the accountability of anyone in the company. Why do big super funds and major shareholders keep supporting numkies? Of course that's a rhetorical question. :)

Us lowly peasants have no control over any of this. We can let off a bit of steam, but the big end of town rules, regardless. ;)

CEO Hudson sounds nervous but very positive. Has announced serious consideration to bringing more of the call centres 'home' :)
To me this is an example of what’s wrong with the thinking. It doesn’t matter the physical location of the call centre or the nationality of the staff, if they are not a) trained/experienced and b) empowered

Regularly having to correct staff on lounge access criteria and that’s definitely NOT been offshored (WP arrival access seems to be my usual sticking point FWIW)

Brilliant summary of outgoing QF Chairman Dick Goyder’s remarks at the AGM:

Oh. I was expecting some sort of 'Downfall' video.
I was anticipating after acknowledging their many faults and need for improvement him concluding by stating “And that’s why I’m resigning now with my golden parachute. Good luck suckers cleaning up the mess I made,” *drops mic*

Chaps like us have to support other chaps like us. I would bet that the directors of major institutions are members of the same clubs etc as those of Qantas. A sacrificial lamb may be offered up - with a big pay-out - but business will continue as normal.
I’m a member of one of those clubs, a fairly regular attendee too, and the only prominent current company director I ever see there is Roger Corbett. Most of the other director types aren’t up to scratch (although some might be members that rarely/never go in).

Rem report got absolutely slammed today. 83% No. Board mood right now:

Finch has got a reverse-Midas touch, doesn’t he?

Can you imagine what Hudson is thinking.

Yes. How much longer do I have to put up with these plebs. I don’t care because it doesn’t matter. We will pay what we want to the executives.

NB: Wrt to re-election of Turd Samson ... no surprises that the reporting was positively spun!
I can agree with your sentiment, and his sycophantic speech was appalling just to keep on the gravy train since he oversaw the appalling behaviour, but I don’t think the T word is appropriate.
