Who is going to the USA, who has changed their travel and what will you do differently?

Hard to tell - the price of WTI Crude in the U.S. is falling - so it depends on whether the refiners choose to pass the savings on or increase their refining margins. If the price of WTI and other U.S. crude grades keep falling due to an expected lowering of demand due to the economy then it won't be long before a lot of the shale oil fields in the U.S. become uneconomical to keep running and the producers shut them in, and then America will become a net importer of crude oil once again - I don't think that was part of the plan!

Can’t really blame this on China, but yes, it’s turned into a big swinging dick competition. I know Trump is big on American exceptionalism but I think he’s bitten off more than he can chew here.
 
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I know I sometimes get caught in an Echo chamber with friends, colleagues and news which can reinforce perceptions.
I also realise this is a topic that can be emotional and it was so nice to be able to read so many well crafted viewpoints that were not attack messages.
I really appreciate AFF and the members
 
Didn't actually have any plans to travel to the United States and I don't think that will change until after the next US elections. I have however been trying to avoid US brands here at home, but that's always a difficult one. Avoiding Starbucks in favour of a local company seems like an easy switch but the local independent is staffed by the owner and their family were as Starbucks employs lots of local young people who would find difficulty getting work if the branch was to close.

Why anyone in Australia would frequent a Starbucks is beyond me, awful place. Thankfully it's one of the few countries where it hasn't succeeded and maintains a few token CBD stores for foreign tourists and students.

Are you avoiding VA? They are a company majority owned by the US.

I don’t get people who avoid brands based on their origin but are fine doing business with local brands who also have foreign ownership.

Yes. But then again they don't fly anywhere I am likely to want to go.

You always have to check who the local brand belongs to. Example Cadburys is though of as British but its owned by Mondelez so they are on the naughty list at the moment.

As a generalism, thay's fine, but whenever I have a few hours to kill at MNL before I check in I visit the Starbucks on Newport Blvd, near the Savoy hotel. It's an ocean of calm and tranquility (relatively) and the fare isn't too bad at all. And you also have a vague idea of what you're getting.

But each to their own...

I'll happily admit to enjoying Starbucks iced beverages in Australia, from time-to-time. I wouldn't go there for a hot coffee though.
 
When were AUS-USA baggage limits lowered? Why? Hawaiian now says only one 23kg checked bag for cattle class/economy, with, I presume USD150 for an extra bag each way. Or is it because my final destination would be PDX on another airline like Alaskan.

Planning for 4th July Fireworks, subject to China allowing them to be exported , plus another 140% import tariff. Then the low Kangarouble, lack or dilution of aussie credit card insurance, and oh, visa up for renewal.

I will pip up to say I keep the USA green - then spend lots filling a 2nd suitcase like Maple syrup, car parts and stuff from best buy (probably not after tariffs). Darn -Taco shells and dried giant chillies- maybe not.

I am itching to do an all in multiday bus trip/tour, but the prices now seen to add in the cost of sanctuary cities hotel shortage premiums, even after driving out to the burbs. But if those mega large Texan outlet direct malls before they all close.
 
Look, 140% tariff is nonsense, and not a good starting point. China loves lucky numbers. Drop the 140 to 88.8% and for FATT (Footware, apparels and Textiles - and Toys) drop it to 44.4%. Sometimes less is more. I will still double down on USA trip, because a 10% VAT or GST introduction, is likely on the cards. With the price of oil so low, airfares should be dropping.
