Who pays for WIFI?

Interesting, thanks!!!

I've always viewed using unsecure wifi networks as like reading a newspaper over someone's shoulder, or, if its open, then its available. I suppose if you leave your house unlocked and the front door open, and somebody takes your TV, then that's still stealing.

Generally I have my dongle with me so in Aus not a problem. Overseas can be a problem. I was in London recently and typically Accor was GBP15 for 24 hours at the Mercure in Kensington, the no name 3 star joint next door had free wireless.. amazing they can do it but Accor can't.

Taping into an unknown or untrusted WiFi connection is not a great idea, in at least two Australian capital cities there has been a malicious AP set up near a large hotel inviting people to connect, which then opens up your data for theft.

I carry a 3G or 4G MiFi Device almost all the time. I own ones for the UK, US, Australia as well as an unlocked one to take other international SIMs. Tends to do the trick for me. Try to avoid paying for hotel internet wherever possible and also avoid services like Boingo and BT Openzone as I find they hardly ever work.

When going out for work I take one of the Telstra Dongles that lie around the office and use that, never trusted hotel networks much.

Don't pay, not even if the company is paying, it's just wrong when your spending upwards of $250 for a room.

Maccas can do it and you only need to spend $3.50 on a coffee, why can't a hotel. Even the Super8 motel (which was USD48 per night) in Flagstaff Az can do it and include a net connection in the cost!

Australian users are being slugged hard.

Matt

I think its legitimate. I'm provided a Data Sim thats plugged into my (work) laptop. I use this when I need to connect to my work network remotely using VPN access. I also carry my own personal SIM that i use for my phone and if I'm using my Tablet, for skyping with family/friends, watching youtube downloading my own photos/music etc..

Admitedly I do sometimes use the work sim for the same above, but that will only be for very brief periods..

I Travel a lot as a tourist, not for business. I do not pay for WiFi. Even small hotels in South America offer free WiFi. In New York I had to go to the lobby to get service. I find the ""Find WiFi" on my iPhone very helpful. No WiFi in the hotel, no business from me.

No it's not.

This argument works for Water and Electricity maybe, but not for wifi.

Actually there might be a couple of Governments out there that might disagree on about even these aswell ! But being in Oz i think we have a right to minimal cost wifi.
