Why a $75 QANTAS fare is better value than a $55 DJ Fare

Of course you are completely excluding the fact that flexible fares on QF give you double status credits... So no they don't give equal reward.

That isn't a big point, a flexible fare on DJ will earn a lot more than just double the SC of a cheap fare. Also in many cases booking a connecting rededeal will get close to the same SC of a fraction of the cost on QF.

Interesting discussion.

If the answer was the same for everyone, there would not be a question in the first place.

If the answer was the same for everyone, we would only have one airline operating in Australia.

Thankfully the answer is not the same for everyone. Hence we have some diversity in the products being offered.

Imagine if buying airline fares was like milk from the supermarket. The $1/litre stuff tastes the same whether bought from Coles or Woollies, and I can't tell the difference between the $1/litre milk and the $2.10/litre stuff. It all turns my coffee from "black " to "Brisbane River brown" quite successfully.

Thankfully, when it comes to airfares we have diversity and choice. This is a good thing as we all have different tastes, needs, desires etc.

Well, for me I fly sufficiently often that chasing status credits are irrelevant, so for me they do give equal reward. For someone who flies substantially less than me, I'll concede that double status credits may actually make a difference.

If I had to choose (as a casual local Australian flyer) between Qantas and Virgin Blue, I would choose the friendliness of Virgin over the snootyness of Qantas every time. Short trips cannot balance the value of points against cost price every time.

I am a member of both Velocity and QFF for points.

I value QFF points at more than 2½¢ each, so the 1000 point minimum has a built in $25+ value.

Velocity Points have a different value, at $55 I'd earn 385 as a VG. Assume the same 2½¢ each so that's a possible $11+ value.

Fair enough but I would love to see examples of valuing Velocity points at 2½¢ each and more importantly what is the best value for Velocity redeeming in economy? I would be surprised if the value was more than 1c point but I could be totally wrong.

I know I can easily get 2c value out of QFF points redeemed for a Oneworld award and obviously a much higher value if redeemed for business class upgrades or business class awards.
