I've been a lurker on AFF for a while now, but haven't had time to spend here until the last 3 weeks (stuck in SCL, and in the break between semester 1 and 2). In this time, I've read a lot of posts from a lot of posters, and one thing that struck me was the variety of avatars that AFFers have. In some cases, it got me to wondering what they are, and more importantly, for what reason were they chosen.

In some cases, the answer to the what question is fairly obvious - serfty's avatar seems to be his QFF history expressed in membership cards, and analt0l's is the seat tag from his A380 F journey, but others are not so obvious.

I thought I'd start a thread where anyone can answer these questions and share with everyone else. I'll start the ball rolling.

My avatar is Uncle Fester from the original Adam's Family series. I chose this avatar because Uncle Fester consistently comes up with bizarre solutions to problems that the Adams Family encounters in most of the episodes. I work in IT, and (short version) I get called in to deal with issues that haven't been seen before, so some of the things I come up could be called bizarre (if you're being charitable - if not, you would probably suggest a drug test).

So, Uncle Fester's "unconventional" thinking has been an inspiration to me, and the least I could do is honour him with an avatar.

Plus it would be really cool to able stick a lightbulb in your mouth and make it light up - I'm still working on that one.

My avatar is a picture of my two dogs, Asha and Fluffy.

I chose them as apart from mrs ejb (who would not appreciate her photo being used) they are my family and the things I miss most when travelling

OK - that answers Q1 - but why did you choose them as your avatar?

P.S. Honest answers are good, but funny / strange answers get extra credit ;)

This ought to be a cool thread. I wonder if there was ever a thread along the lines of "Why did you choose your handle" (there probably has been and several on that note...)

I've had two avatars since I started with AFF. The first one was simply a glass of water sitting on top of the coughtail area of the armrest of a QF 737. It's no reflection on me other than I was trying to get a nice perspective photo of that glass of water. When I realised I had no avatar, I wanted something fairly neutral. I thought an innocuous picture of a glass of water did the trick. EDIT: Here is my first avatar:

I have a similar photo not of water but that is my FT profile picture:

This picture was probably special because it was the first time I'd flown international QF premium class on a ticket which I obtained by myself. It was only AKL-SYD, but it was great service and great crew.

My current AFF avatar is a badge to indicate seat 5A. This badge was taken on a QF A380. It was the first time that I had ever flown First on any airline, and I was glad it was on the QF A380, and 5A is where I sat (which has the most privacy of all the seats in that cabin).

I changed my avatar to show seat 5A quite soon after I had finished the trip with that flight. Again, it is no reflection on me. It certainly doesn't reflect the seat which I choose the most often, nor does the number embody any particular meaning to me. I mainly chose it because I thought it made for an interesting picture at the time when the A380 still was a fairly new and premium thing, much less people flying the A380 in F. When I experience the next big thing, perhaps I'll change the avatar again.....

Anat0l, when I read some "older" posts where you linked to your "5A' gallery, I kicked myself for not doing the same - I burned some points for an F upgrade SIN-LHR, and got 1A - would have made a nice photo. But I guess it would just seem derivative now. :)

My avatar is of my dog Chilli. I chose it after receiving a lot of criticism on a previous avatar on another forum. The previous avatar was just me as a kid.

So, one day I took a photo of Chilli on a beanbag, with her ears out to the sides and I thought she looked like Falkor the luckdragon from The Neverending Story, flying through the clouds.

Most people like the avatar, so I rarely change it, though occasionally will alter it for a special season, such as Easter where Chilli gets a headband with bunny ears and Christmas where she gets santa’s hat :p

I have to say that Chilli looks indecently comfortable in that photo. What breed is she?

Beanbag? Lucky dog; that's an extra legume seat.:)

Mine is a break in the ice above Antartica from a QF 747-400 from a work trip that we did in 2004 when we chartered a jumbo and took about 120 people on a 14 hour once in a lifetime trip. Saw amazing stuff and drank a lot of fine wine.

Mine - I don't know - just some handy colours I came up with one day after being at my footy club social rooms....

I do remember you had another avatar that was an animated GIF of a stick figure person walking a stick figure dog.

In respect to my 16Y/O dog when I had to put her to sleep, I changed avatars

My avatar is of a mazda rotor. I used to build old school mazda rotaries back in the day and have loved them ever since. The avatar reminds me that one day I'll get back into it (once the travel subsides)...

Once you get into the rotary engine you just can't escape it.

I had a bridge ported 13B turbo charged and lots of ceramic parts in a S5 RX7 once - very very quick car...

My avatar is a picture of part of a golf ball.

Why? I love golf more than any other thing in this world. I used to be quite good but since I gave up smoking and put on weight my game has gone downhill. Still does not stop me from playing at every opportunity including countless golf trips around NSW, Australia and Thailand. Last trip to Thailand I played 9 games in 10 days and I would have played that game as well if it wasn't for that ....

P.S. If you think I am a fanatic (or lunatic) you are absolutely right. I have never walked off a golf course unless it was dangerous such as a severe thunderstorm. I once finished a game of golf with a fractured ankle. I fractured the ankle on the third hole (actually the 11th but we teed off on the 9th), birdied the next hole and finished 11 over par (maybe 12 over par) for the round....

Mine is a picture I took while getting a fish pedicure in Singapore 2 years ago. It's the most interesting travel-related photo that I'm in. ;)
