Why is Alan Joyce still Qantas' CEO?

I also think the final outcome was the worst one for QF. Gillard had the ability to invoke a different national interest clause and could have stopped the grounding but didn't and forced it to go to court adding 48hrs to the shutdown

The best Christmas present I got this year was her demise, and it came early.

At least in Hockey we have someone who is actually prepared to mouth the words 'guarantee' and 'assistance' in relation to QANTAS and to discuss both sides of the privatisation sword.

If the airline falls over, the wrath of the Australian people (even though many of them are cretins who venerate QANTAS while preferring to fly on the same LCCs that are its undoing) will be enough to bring down the government. QANTAS is not Ansett, it is a very different proposition. I think the Liberals realise that.

I think that some of the things that Qantas needs to do just can't be done with the Qantas Sale Act in place.

EH

It was also an event which lost Qantas at least $200m and the unquantifiable goodwill of passengers who were grounded or book away for fear of future groundings. I know lots of corporate accounts opened up afterwards to Virgin Australia and others because business travelers don't want their travel plans at the mercy of management and employees who are unable to tackle fundamental business cost issues without resorting to those sorts of catastrophic measures.

I suspect some of the QF Domestic loss of market share is a result of this decision. At a minimum, my contribution to that share.

Actually in the lead up to the grounding i was booking on Virgin some weeks thanks to the unions.. I was grounded in London when the shutdown happened. I applaud the action taken as since then I have had no issues travelling.. Last time I checked at work it was putting more people on QF than VA again too.

You don't sell your family to the IRA for a bag of potatoes.

QANTAS doesn't, just doesn't, leave people stranded. Not here, not in Singapore, not in London. Not bloody anywhere.

The man is a fool.

So are the successive Commonwealth ministers who terminated the airline's security and then left it flailing in a sea of newly open landing slots.

But the unions holding phantom strikes that stranded pax is ok though? and yes i was caught by those as well as being in London during the grounding.

Those same unions are looking at the possibility of action against QF if pprune is to be believed!

An interesting question.

At best a lot of Joyce's decisions are questionable. I cannot understand why Joyce is still in that position other than he is stil there because the board wants to sell Qantas.

Given politics is mentioned in this thread.... Maybe he is still there for the reason the (second-) last PM lasted so long - proponents had only one positive spin - her apparent "resilience", "strength", "determination", or whatever superlative they chose on the day.

Unfortunately, that on it's own isn't enough to be competent.

I would say that the decision to ground flights was a bold attempt to stand up to the unions, have to admire that.

The article states that the board made the wrong choice between AJ and JB. While not wanting to take sides, the article neglects to mention that VA has not been making regular profits either and had to be bailed out by its shareholders and partners, including the Samoan government not so long ago. (Standing by for reaction with tin hat on.) JV

The mistake was to create a well armed and very motivated enemy .
They could have left aj with the pixies and avoided some of the current pain.
Hell hath no fury like a spurned ceo in waiting...

The question is though would JB have been the right man for the job that was required? I don't believe he was.. they wanted a hatchet man to change the structure..

And Look at the good it has done them.

One could argue that they could have been in a much worseHposition.. however either way we don't know which was the right move.

I'm guessing Alan Joyce would argue that!

The Qantas grounding was NOT the low-point of AJ's tenure; it was (and is) the Jetstar Asia misadventure.

You might want to check your facts on some of the positives, the a380 purchase and FJ distancing I don't think had much to do with current management decisions.

Some of the negatives might need some touching up too........................

JB hasn't made a profit yet at Virgin - it is very easy to spend money but he hasn't made money yet.

As for Joyce, he is just a puppet of the board - put anyone else in, they will also be at the mercy of the board. The board makes all the decisions.
