Hello All.

Just a quick question for all of you. Why is QF J SYD-HNL so expensive? It is outrageous! When my family and I travel to HNL my PA has been booking it and I only just saw that it is so expensive. Does anyone know why?

Thanks

Because they can, little competition keeps prices high and if in QFF member its only choice. I'm no JQ lover but have done SYD/HNL/SYD twice with them due to price, its called business class but far from it, no lay flats but bulkhead seats are best, food and service no complaints, we picked J fares up for $2150 with full QFF points. Have thought VA should use their planes to go there at competitive pricing, certainly an opening for other airlines too.

The hard product is ordinary as well...

Edit: The loads seem to be quite full as well?

Do QF have skybeds to HNL? I thought it was B767's with the old dreamtime seats. If that is the case, then i'd definitely fly JQ in Business Max.

In school holidays ?

Some of those cashed up FIFO bogans have a lot of $$ to spend

There are no lie flat beds on the SYD-HNL route, alternatives are AirNZ which has a overnight in AKL or HA with its new A330 product.

Maybe they do it on purpose to:

1) Push people to JQ, and
2) Cry they need to catch a break because their International business is struggling

Why? You get 12 more inches of seat pitch vs the JQ seats.

Spot on, no competition = terrible uncompetitive fares. I'd put up with it if they had a decent product however, it's just.....

QF are no different to any other business....in fact, their better at it than most!

Spot on Leumas, ask my son, he is a long haul pilot with Qantas and he thinks the same, plus all the former Qantas routes were GIVEN to Jetstar, what other business gets nothing for its goodwill when it is disposed of and then gets critisized when it is left with the unprofitable areas ??

I did manage to get return flights to Honolulu from Melbourne in Business over Easter this year for $5900. Im already looking at Easter next year and VA/HA have business all the way from Melbourne and on a new A330 for $3300 while Qantas are quoting $11000. Just out of curiosity I priced dates in Feb on Webjet on Qantas in Business and it came in at $6000. The Qantas website exact same dates $11000. Also looked at easter 2013 on webjet and same as Qantas $11000.
I notice Honolulu wasn't included in the current 2 for 1 business sale. To be honest $5900 on a tired old 767-300 is a take and I won't do that again. On a A330 I would be OK with it. It's cheaper to fly to LA or New York in business then Honolulu !!!

I should have clarified, all things being equal would you still choose JQ?

Well... no, but they aren't equal? I don't get the question, who would pick Jetstar, a low cost carrier, over Qantas, a full service carrier if they were the same price?

There are those on here who suggest that JQ have a better reputation of QF in Singapore.

Agreed that the QF product is not worth the premium, however is it a better product than JQ?

Do you mean JQ have a better reputation than QF in Singapore? If so that is a ridiculous statement. I have been spending a lot of time in Singapore recently hanging with a lot of serious business and leisure travellers and have never heard a bad word about Qantas. Qantas flies their best product into Singapore (A380 from MEL and SYD) and it is not a bad product.

Jetstar on the other hand is a basketcase in really every respect and I doubt there is any place in the world where it has a good reputation with customers.

It is expensive because it is popular - Frequent Flyers want the seats, so there is only 25 to sell. It is supply and demand - people are willing to pay it.

I really don't understand why some people have so much difficulty understanding this concept.

I think people understand supply/demand - but I also don't understand who is paying these prices. I don't think many people can believe that someone would pay the same (pretty much) for a return in a clapped out 763 (actually as people here know I have nothing really against the 763 as it is my preferred choice for SYD-MEL) to HNL as they would to fly to SYD in J on an A380.

If you are happy to spend say $22K just on flights to HNL (for a couple) then you must be on a pretty decent wage and so would expect some luxury really - not the QF product.

The other thing that just doesnt make sense is that these flights are full - so that is 25 seats per day three days per week which is 3,900 people...
