Wine lovers musings, amusings and news

I went to a Cellardoor wine fair in Melbourne in 2016 - also thought it was a bargain for $20. Might go again.

Interesting that the range seemed to be different between the one you went to and the one I went to - I was able to taste all of the Wolf Blass wines you noted weren't available.

Interested in a couple of your ratings ... why did you rate the Leo Buring Clare and Eden Rieslings so low? And why was the Drumborg Riesling so much better? I haven't tasted the Drumborg, but thought the Leo Buring was very good.

Re the Leo Buring, I just found them a little flabby/flat/dull and the Drumborg not so. I have only recently started drinking Riesling - so I wouldn't read too much into my personal ratings.... One of the reasons I was so keen to get to an event like this was that I could sample lots of new wines - now when they come up discounted somewhere I will at least have some idea of what I am paying for.

Has anyone tried '06 Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon? any comments?

If you have had other vintages, how do you compare/rate the '06 to/against them?

I have seen AC's and Wozza's CT notes on earlier vintages and reviewed the '06 CT notes by others.

I have had and thoroughly enjoyed the '00 and '04, I have some '05 (via auction) on the way but haven't tried that vintage yet.

I ask because I have located some '06 via a local retail outlet (so the deal is not available to AFFers) but while I could get a little of it at ~60% of normal retail price, it is still about $15 more then earlier vintages are going for on the secondary market - so tossing up if I should jump on the new retail stock, or wait until the '06 starts to come up on Langton's

Hi dear Steady

On conundrums like that I also check out Winosphere and Vivino.

CM gave a 93, saying:

It needs air. Lots of it. Dry, chocolatey tannin has a mighty clench to it – though the wine carries it. Dust, blackcurrant, gravel, dried herbs and glossy chocolate. Excellent length. Some alcohol warmth, but not in a distracting way. A substantial cool climate release. The back label says short to medium-term cellaring, but I suspect it’ll go for a good long while.

Looking at the comments that follow on Winosphere from the punters (most recent, 2013) they give (mostly) favourable reviews.

On Vivino, the 06 scores a very impressive 4.4 from 30 reviews (if I've read the stats right): http://www.vivino.com/wines/4508046

I know The Barrel Hunter well and his review is worth a read. He's got an excellent palate and describes his wines well.

It might just be a question of price and how long you want to wait as the 06 looks good.

Cheers, Wozza

Thanks Wozza, try as I may - I couldn't find any reviews for '06 on either Winosphere or Vivino

Don't know what I was doing wrong but I will follow your link for Vivino and persevere with Winosphere

I have a few really thin pieces left (like the lids of the Balnaves boxes) which I'm thinking of laquering and turning into placemat type things. Might make a cheeseboard or similar out of the thicker bits. Quite happy with how the table turned out - looks better in person than the photo.

I got the idea from a restaurant in Singapore called Binomio. If you're ever there that have some good wine-inspired decor

Did you do the work yourself? Or have it made? Is the table itself a custom made item ? Or recycled? I am really keen to imitate this.
