Wine lovers musings, amusings and news

The one I remember from 1979 had a small plastic black bull attached to the neck - which is why I bought it! Cost around £3 in U.K. We were postdocs at the time so flushed with funds and could buy quality wine!:)

It was not of high quality. But I liked the plastic bull!

I agree, it was not of great quality but I would be interested to taste it again (a la recherché du temps perdu) and see how it fares today. It may well have had a clean up in the post Communist Hungary. Much of Central Europe is capable of making very good wine.

The '16 Home Hill Kelly's Reserve Pinot Noir and '16 Tolpuddle Pinot Noir have been released

Thanks Steady, I made my pilgrimage out to Home Hill yesterday to pick up some supplies - I did have to call a temporary halt to my buying ban, but some things are worth it. The 2016 Kelly's Reserve is very nice - not quite at the same level of intensity and depth as the 2015, but still a very elegant wine. I even managed to talk them into parting with a couple of bottles of the 2015 after being told that it was sold out when I was last there in mid-May. I think they raided the restaurant stock for me. :)

Now, I'll have to try and track down some Tolpuddle.

Bugger, you could have grabbed 3 for me while you were there....

The Tolpuddle is available from The Gas Works now, but will probably be available cheaper somewhere down the track

Sorry Steady, I had assumed from your comment that you had your order underway. I'll try and remember to check next time. I'd have been happy to pick some up for you. If we'd coordinated things a little better we could have combined the delivery with your previous care package.

That was my thought when I saw your post - my care package is still being cared for down South. I may have a meeting down your way later this week so could end up collecting it.

I haven't seen any published reviews of the latest Tolpuddle PN yet, doesn't sound like the '16 is a good example from mini2's post above - a good reason to hold off and let the dust settle before jumping on some.

Let me know if you are coming down. I've got three bottles sitting at home, so I can always forward those onto you and then head back out to re-fill my allocation.

Domaine A have a few new vintage spring releases coming up;

Kudos to Sonia, Cecilia and the team for basically keeping the restaurant open for us. I didn't realise just how late we left until I examined the uber receipt. Good night.

Via Email today,

Steady,

Our crew are heading south to Melbourne for our annual Brokenwood wine club dinner. We have decided to add to the fun this year and host a "Pop-up happy hour" tasting in the CBD.

Call into the freshly opened Recoleta for a taste of our new release wines accompanied by delicious canapés for only $25 p/person. Located on Bourke St beyond the Butchers' Diner, a grand staircase will lead you up to a beautiful first floor room, reminiscent of the well-heeled, leafy district of Buenos Aires.

Brokenwood Winemaker, Stuart Hordern will give an update on what's happening at the winery and discuss the wines on show that evening.

We welcome you to invite your friends, and please feel free to continue on to our degustation dinner at The Melbourne Supper Club, just a short walk away.
Tickets are available for both events below.

Kind regards,

Carlee Watson
Wine Club & Direct Sales Manager

Hey @Delectable Blue, I just got this from Daisy Chatto

Hello!

This weekend has been a bit of an amazing blur. Due to moving earlier this year and doing our first vintage in Tassie we were a bit disorganised and missed getting our wines bottled and in on time for the Halliday book. BUT this weekend we have just been blown away by Halliday, he reviewed both our wines in the Weekend Australian Magazine and in case you missed it I thought I should share them! We are truly humbled and overwhelmed by this and all the support from our customers/believers - it really is dream making in action.

2016 Chatto Isle Pinot Noir

Cherry and plum both contribute to the bouquet. The palate is altogether serious, with a remarkable mouthful built around the foundation of precisely calibrated tannins and hints of forest. Great purity and intensity.

98 Points!!! (We are ecstatic.)

2016 Chatto Huon Valley Pinot Noir

The bouquet is still locked up, the palate anything but: intensely and immediately expressive, dark cherry/berry fruits held in an embrace of fine but persistent tannins and an airbrush of French oak. Its balance and length guarantee a long future, with spices bursting through.

97 Points!!! (I mean...just Wow)

Great wines but sadly likely to be well beyond my budget for a serious shopping list. This (pricing list) from the James Halliday email:

"Alongside the highly anticipated 2013 Grange (RRP $850) – which is already being touted as being among the winery’s best – is the trio of stellar chardonnays comprising the 2015 Yattarna Chardonnay (RRP $150), 2016 Reserve Bin A Chardonnay (RRP $125) and the 2016 Bin 311 Tumbarumba Chardonnay (RRP $45).

New vintages of long-time favourite reds include the 2015 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz (RRP $95), 2015 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon (RRP $95) and 2015 RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz (RRP $200), plus other standouts such as the 2015 Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz (RRP $45)."

I guess some will pay full rrp- but I am sure there will be opportunities to pick some up for a lot less
