If I were working at the checkout and hearing warnings for "scam alerts" whatever they are, I'd certainly be hesitant to sell a few thousand dollars worth and having it become my problem again later on.

I bought the exact same amount at the same store with the same operator the day before without having to give my phone number. In fact, I've bought more than $1000 on many previous occasions at that store and others without ever having to give any personal details at all, other than swipe my EDR card where all that and more lives.

There is a prompt that comes up at $1000 that asks for "business details". Some checkout staff will have no idea what to do, some will insist on you providing them, and some just type in anything and don't ask. If you look on your receipt, see what appears in the "Business Details" section, which is what they would have typed in.

If a scammer asked their victim to buy $6k of gift cards from Woolies and the staff didn't question it then the staff would get in trouble. They are just doing their job.

For sure, and I've been asked if I'm being scammed and given the "Are you being scammed" flyer every single time.

It's the other parts of the transaction that they are not doing properly/fully/consistently that's causing angst as a customer.

This does explain the lines of information thrust upon the $6k dude next to me. He clearly hadn't been asked before as it (ie the word "business") was causing some confusion (I think he was also paying with a business Amex). But I wasn't asked for anything despite purchasing simultaneously at the next register.

The strata I pay operate on StrataPay platform not DEFT, and they charge 1.65% for credit cards, so I use Sniip which is only 0.85% to Bpay into StrataPay.

The Webjet ones are quite good for hotel bookings. Functionally they’re the same as Qantas Hotels (i.e. Expedia) but you’re earning 10x QFF points instead of the 3x (or 6x with QBR) that you normally get with Qantas.

Great to see the cafe choice gift cards coming back on sale as they are quite flexible in where you can use them (I've used them everywhere from Starbucks to accidentally a McDonalds in Canada). I reckon I must have bought close a thousand dollars worth of various restaurant gift cards over the course of a year. And for those wondering, no I don't eat at Macca's everyday either. Where I work, there is a Starbucks nearby that has 50% off sandwiches and salads at the end of the day meaning I can feed myself with (relatively) healthy options for $5, something I struggle to do at Colesworth.

Yes indeed it can be added to Apple Pay. If you pay with your iPhone then you should be able to see how much you spent (and thus how much is left) without having to manually check via the website. However, if you're like me and tend to pay with their Apple Watch, then such transactions won't show up on the iPhone.

One more point, and something I'm keen to try is using these gift cards to book a hotel night, as I believe hotels is one of the categories of spend. If they are accepted as a method of payment for a hotel stay, then this will become a gift card I'll stock up on a lot.
