Woolworths Qantas Credit Card

I rang today to cancel the card before the annual fee is due and they offerred me nothing ! So cancel I will.:(

Did you ring to cancel the card, or did you ring and ask for the annual fee to be waived...? Me thinks that the 1,000 points might only be on offer as a sweetener to suck you into paying another annual fee. If you ring to cancel then I'd imagine that the bonus points would not be on offer.

I am hoping that by the time I give them a call, they will have already seen the pattern of people leaving to avoid the annual fee, and hopefully increase the bonus point booty, or do something about the annual fee...

This card is not that bad since it is a true 1:1 non amex branded card acceptable everywhere, however if you are only on this card for the sign on bonus, then it's time to leave :!:

Just said I wanted to cancel and said it was because I couldn't justify the annual fee. Operator clearly didn't get my veiled message. I have a fee free for life Citibank that gives me 1:1 so I'll stick with that for times when the Amex isn't accepted.

I think they've realised what's happening. I was told to call back after making my final payment to close the account which I did today. They asked me if I would keep it open if they waived the annual fee, to which I said yes.

No - the card has only been around a year.

Maybe you are confusing with everyday rewards which provide a point for every dollar over $30 for purchases at Safeway stores - no matter how you pay.
In hindsight you're correct - the wife has one for Woollies that works like that which is why I got confused.

I hope that if anybody has the annual fee waived, then it will be posted here so we all can benefit from it...

I posted earlier saying I had my annual fee waived today. It was a 2 step process. First, commit to cancelling and pay out the final payment amount. Then, call back and ask to cancel the card now you have a zero balance.

Thanks @DeKa. That's good to know as I'll be calling to cancel despite the 1,000 points soon. If I get the same offer I may keep it open as it's then a better back-up card than my free-for-life virgin money/ignite card.

I did the same, paid out the balance then rang to cancel and got offerred free year.

Called up today to cancel the card in the effort to have the annual fee waived for the next 12 months, First guy I spoke to said that all he could offer was 1,000 QFF points and I would have to pay the $89 fee... My reply was that it in fact would be a better idea if I cancelled my account and had Mrs Shintaro apply for a $0 annual fee (for the first 12 months) plus also a sign-on of 5,000 QFF....

I was then promptly put onto the cancellations department and discussed my plan with the customer service rep, he said that I had a very good point and that he was happy to waive the $89 fee for the next 12 months....

All in all a 5 min call saved $89, which I intend to spend at BWS tonight on some nice red wine (20% off six bottles + 5% off for EDR barcode scanning) Mrs Shintaro also has a bonus offer at BWS this week - Spend $30 for 300 bonus QFF....

So in summary I'm going to get 6 bottles of Penfolds 389 + 217 Standard QFF points + 300 Bonus QFF points all for an outlay of a mere $128.50 taking into consideration my $89 saving from the phone call today (works out to $21.42 per bottle for some nice penfolds..!)

I love milking the system, anyone think I could have done better lol

Edit: Yes in fact I could have done better but it would have meant Mrs Shintaro getting all the QFF points on the basis that I had to then be a supplementary card holder... plus the stuffing around for another application...!

I do that with HSBC platinum annually with the same result. But must have the account paid out to zero.

BTW, has anyone used this card for say PAYG bill quarterly? :), i suspect it is not allowed as it states not for business.

Yes two of us put quarterly personal taxes on this card.....a total of 5 amounts so far.

thanks cove, i think i will apply for this one :)

PAYG as a sole trader or a standard employee should not be an issue, since it can easily be considered as "personal" not "Business" expenses. Saying that... I'm a sole trader and have had no problems obtaining points from PAYG or GST payments, on many transactions which I believe would be deemed as being 100% business.

Like some others around here, I got stung by some aggressive interest charges for late payments (all be it only a few days - But end up getting charges for interest in advance for the next billing month, even if full balance has been paid prior to the next month payment date) since this mob slugged me, and I felt ripped off, I see it as fair game and don't hesitate to put anything through this card, even the odd BAS / GST tax bill.

IMHO I think they don't really care what is put through the card, within reasonable amounts, however the clause for business use is to stop someone putting massive business expense through what is generally targeted as a consumer card only...

I would say if you are a small fish, then most business charges will not bleep on their radar...

I would not draw attention to your transaction by doing say a $100,000 Bpay into the Woolies EDR card that has say a $20,000 credit limit and a balance of zero then wacking through as much as $120,000 in taxes and fees.
I think that could draw an audit phone call.
At that point if you tell them it is a BAS bill it is possible that the card could get stopped based on the card rules.

My PAYG bills arent 6 digits so i should be ok then :D

If your quarterly personal tax payment is say 18,000 and your credit limit is 10,000 and your daily BPay is 5,000 just start paying the first amount about a week earlier than the due date. That gives you time to do a couple of BPays to finish off the payment without incurring late charges from the Tax Office.
For some unknown reason your BPay may take a day or two extra to arrive as funds available for use.
Definitely don't mail a cheque as that would not clear for use in your card for more than a week and from Perth that could work out to take about 10 days from mailing the cheque.

Excuse my ignorance and inquisition here, but how do you pay your personal tax yourself (as opposed to the employer making PAYG deductions) as an employee?

Call the Tax Office on 1300 898 089 with your tax assessment and your best credit card for points earning.

In regard to personal tax, I am referring to paying a tax bill (i.e a tax notice where an amount of tax is owed at the end of the financial year)

In general this is only the case if your employer does not take out the correct taxation from your pay, or you have another source of income in which you must pay the required tax at the end of the financial year.

In my case, being a sole trader, I am 100% responsible in paying my PAYG & GST quarterly, end result is that self employed / sole traders have the ability to earn points on every cent of tax to be paid...
