It also has a bar code on the back - is this goining to be for paperless boarding cards for the sacnner at the gate to read?

Given mag strips seem to be slowly being taken off things, perhaps there are plans afoot not to have mag strip readers in some places, and rely just on the bar codes.

.....and your point is:?:

My point being that this is one of the most puerile threads I have ever come across on this site, and the amount of indiginant hot air blowing through it was making me nod off to sleep. I mean come on folks there has to be more important things to discuss  It's a card for goodness sake, lets get some perspective here.

My SG card's magnetic strip used to wear out from all the lounge entry swipings.

With the new WP card, it is certainly easier to read the name, number and expiry dates.

I noted a similr thing with my HH gold card- the embossing is gone.

Zig,
You have to remember that people value things differently. I guess you can look at it like an AMEX card. The Blue card is plain. The Gold card looks better. The Platinum card is a bit fancy and the Centurion card is rather special. As such I think a little bit of effort could/should be put in by QANTAS for the 4% of members that have the highest (well 2nd highest) tier membership.

It is not just 4%. I assume that all cards are now going to be printed in a similar manner; it would seem risible to print the platinum cards differently on different machines

If QF starts charging $4500 a year for Platinum membership ( c.f. AMEX Centurion AU ) I'd reconsider . At the moment it is free .

If the card is such a big issue, then there are other FF schemes that might be better for those that care on that aspect; unless holding LT status, nothing forcing the holding of QF status

I think if QF charged $3-4k for the card I'd want something special.;)

That wasn't a suggestion BTW

True, but is the $4.5k for the card or the services that you get as a member? Is the $30k you spend with QANTAS for the card or the flying? I see similarities in that. Some of you will too, others wont.

I don't ; whether you credit flights to Qantas, another scheme or even don't both with FF memberships, the flight costs are the same. There is no additional cost for the points

An AMEX Ego membership costs silly $ regardless and they market the titanium as making it "special" . Embossing is needed on credit cards for dealing with offline transactions on a zip-zap

Quick take down the pics! You revealed the secret phone number to the masses!!!!
It does not matter; calling 13 13 13 get the same service as the 'secret' phone number once you enter your WP membership number.

(Works the other way as well).

Look here is another take on all this. Without the raised embossing the card is a little thinner. The wallet is just that little less bulky.

The other thing from my point of view is I so rarely have to produce it. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year if that. Its all on the boarding pass anyway.

So as long as the benefits stay, I have no problem at all with it.
