Hi,

I recently signed up for Aeroplan to purchase some points. However, I am now unable to log in and received the following error message: “Your Aeroplan account has been deactivated.” I have no bookings or points on this account and only accessed it yesterday. Upon searching online, I discovered that many others have experienced this issue and that it often takes multiple phone calls to reactivate the account. Additionally, it can take 2-3 months to reopen the account after you send all your ID documents for validation. It seems there has been a security breach, and points are being stolen from people’s accounts. I wanted to warn others about this. I will no longer be purchasing points as it is not worth the hassle.

Yeah this happened to me, account was blocked out of nowhere. It took me at least 3 months for them to reply to me, all I got told is that the account was flagged and I need to verify my identity.

Very annoying and imo a bit ridiculous, you can’t even make a new account as they will block any new sign ups with identical names and date of birth.

The main issue for most FF programs has been fraud out of asia. Unscrupulous individuals or travel agents are known to sign up for mileage accounts, buy miles, then sell them via ‘heavily discounted’ airfares to unsuspecting customers.

Some programs have even gone as far as to block large swathes of award seats ex asia for this reason. Or alternatively not even allow travel to ticketed passengers ex Asia.

Opening an account, buying miles and redeeming in quick succession can raise flags :(

Yes, this is strange because I don’t have a single point in my account! At least with Velocity and Qantas, the companies are located in Australia, making it easier to chase them up or report issues. It’s much harder when the company is overseas.

I am also suffering from this. Sent a copy of my drivers licence - and told it's going to be a few months.

I'll try calling - the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for the heads up.
I recently joined and just managed to buy a swag of points courtesy of a very generous bonus offer that I read about [i think on this website?] Cheaper and more flexible than trying to think at the last minute about where and when to fly
