Went on hols in Dec 1999 when QF were running a promotion if you travelled on 5 OneWorld Airlines in a certain timeframe you would receive 100,000 bonus ff points.
At the time a business class round Australia redemption was 37,500 so you could get maybe 8 sectors for a journey up to 11,000kms (I think?) - Serfty know's exactly.
So it wasn't so much the deal I was travelling on initially but the return on investment I would get as a result when you think about the value of the entire routing in dollar terms for J class.
The routing I did which cost less than $2K was:
SYD BA SIN AY BKK CP HKG CX SIN QF DRW
It was a bit of a headslam when I logged on to QF to manage my bookings as I had half used round Oz tickets in both directions next coupled with a mixture of self funded and work flights in amongst it all in order to resume journeys here 'n' there.
My friends' and family's jaws still hit the deck on this one;
MEL-JFK in late 2009 was $908 return. That was only $10 more than that fare to LAX, which means that Qantas flew me, wife and 2 kids across the US and A for five bucks each, each way!
As a point of reference, I am writing this in the JAL lounge at SFO and the shuttle from the hotel to the airport was $14 per person. That was nuts ...
37½K QFF points on any wholly domestic Australian trip of up to 11,000 kms in Business Class. Originally, there were few other limits other than returning to the origin finished the itineray.
You could fly, say, CBR-SYD-MEL-SYD-MEL-SYD ... until the 11K was used up. (or OOL-BNE-SYD-BNE ...)
Later they introduced other rules such as OOL=BNE and could only stopover at a place once or transit twice.
Work mate and I booked YUL-LHR return, then from Stansted to Gothenburg on Ryanair for 1p each way per person (plus 55 pounds tax each), left Stansted at 7a, returned by 4p. Grabbed a taxi from the airport, paid extra for a city tour, had lunch with a client from 11a to 1p, taxi back to airport, flew home.
Besides the many x cent fares on LCC's, the best on QF was 9 flights (8 ticketed) on QantasLink for about $25 per flight. A cheap albeit slow way to build up status.
Of course even better is free. Not on QF though. Virgin has come to that party.
Best deal was for the wife and I a couple of years ago in the middle of the GFC. (Have to admit I didn't have too many wins during that period...and shudder when I think of what I could have done with the dough I lost on the market).
Free AirAsia fligts to KUL plus free connecting flights to coughet. Had to fork out for taxes and charges, but that was no big deal. When combined with a week in coughet at a 4* hotel for a total AU$31 that I got from Ebay, it was all pretty sweet.
I'm sure that some savy travellers have obtained great upgrades to business class or moon class or whatever, or deals worth more money, but I was pretty happy with my small win.
Best normal fare was SYD-AKL-LAX vv on NZ late 2009 for $974... used points to upgrade both ways too...
Got in on the UA "deal" LAX-SYD vv in C for AUD$1800
..and am in on the BKK-IST-GRU "deal" in C for AUD$813...
Like many of the OW flyers here I have occasionally snagged a really good "UP" fare run in the US... unfortunately NZ has savaged the points earnings on those... (at least we still get the same SC's.... for now....)
This one's probably a little different...
JQ SYD-DRW-SIN one-way for about $200. After missing the connection at DRW, JQ put us into a hotel, offered meals and a $100 voucher. In net terms, I pretty much flew for free.
Also did a SIN-HKG-SIN-AKL-CHC-AKL-SIN-HKG-SIN run last year for around $1360, over 3 separate nested bookings.
