Short Belfast C.1, former RAF. Has been the subject of a payment dispute in Cairns for some years.
Haha it didn't last an hour...
That is correct...it is called "Hector", a Short Belfast, there are 2 left in the world out of 10 made.
The other one called "Enceladus", they were all named after Gods, is at RAF Cosford in England, nicely restored. The guy there didn't believe me there was one rusting away a few kms from me in Australia.
After the RAF stopped using them in 1976 some were scrapped and some were used by private companies for freight operations. This one was used by Heavy Lift flying mining equipment into PNG for years, I have seen it land at the CNS airport many times. The mining died off and the company abandoned the plane in Cairns in about 2011.
Currently the parking fees are hundreds of thousands of dollars. CNS Airport towed it away to a quiet corner and I guess would LOVE to get rid of it...many museums in the UK would LOVE to have it...but it is not airworthy anymore. I did hear a rumour that HARS at Woollongong was looking into it but.....
If you are ever in the CNS DOM Qantas club you can see it across the runway.
Or from the highway side turn off the highway into the general aviation bit and head left.
