Lost Bet..... Punishment is coming!

OK.

My son is an Essendon fan and well let's just say I am a Lions guy!

Before the NAB cup started My son had bet with me that Essendon would kick Bribane's butt! Needless to say I lost... Oh and I lost big time!!

The stakes were as follows. If I won.. My son would have to fly Y to Europe when he goes there later in the year. If I lost... I had to pay for him to go in F (rather than J)..... AND I had to fly in Y:shock::shock:

This is not something I wish to comprehend. I am frightened. I tried to get out of it by saying I would donate some money to a charity but my son is adament I have to stick by our bet.

He is NOT going to be on the flight with me so he wants photographic evidence

The way I see it is I have a few options.

1) Renege on the bet. Not ideal as it would have me lose credibility with him.

2) Buy an F ticket PLUS a Y ticket so I have 2 boarding passes and can have a photo taken in a Y seat.

3) Just do it!:shock:

To make it harder for me. I am NOT allowed to fly QF or EK because he wants me to fly with someone new.

Does anyone have advice for me??

As tempting as option 2 must sound, it wouldn't be in the spirit of the loss ..

Carrier suggestions: EY are supposed to be good in general (plus you would get lounge access etc with DJ Gold), MH I understand has fairly decent legroom in whY
Other suggestions: Booze, sleeping tablets and noise cancelling headphones

Maybe you can start hoping - or even praying - that your son will relent and go easy with his loving, caring, doting and so supportive father - if that doesn't work straight away, maybe stress age, infirmity or insanity and hope that he was brought up right to respect his elders at their advanced age????

(Suggest you play on the DVT possibility and how your need for ongoing medical care and support, let alone an early demise,would seriously impact on his future travel comfort, etc.)

Sorry but the DVT option really doesnt have legs,,either.As F seats more comfortable than J also more comfortable than Y so it is that actual rates of DVT increase with cabin class-just a lot fewer people in F so you dont hear about it.
Moral of the story-never make a bet you will be uncomfortable losing.

2 suggestions,
1 Tell him the NAB cup doesn't count and go double or nothing on the first time the two teams meet in the home and away season,the risk is that if you lose again you may have to make two Y flights !
2 Book with a one world carrier like CX and change aircraft at HKG and hope you get an upgrade on the second sector.

My feeling is you need to stick to your bet. If you back out, you'll lose faith with your son, something very hard to get back (as you'd know).

On a lighter note, can you tell me when and where you are flying? I might be inclined to fly too, just for the experience!!!!

Unfortunately my friend, the most noble thing to do would be #3. I know I am not in the enviable position that you are in having a "minimum standard" for flying every time (I can't afford it), but a bet is a bet! And pulling an act of the first kind isn't good; the second kind isn't really one either.

MH has good legroom in Y; most Asian carriers actually are not too bad. Or, simply stump up any carrier and pay extra for an exit row seat.

What would happen to the bet if you bought a Y seat but then were operationally upgraded? Would you be constrained to refuse the upgrade, or would you have to "fulfill" the bet properly on another flight (which would necessitate your purchasing another F ticket for your son)?

Perhaps you might want to try BA or CX, then. Buy an exit row just in case for either, but with ow Emerald you might score an op-up Again, unless this is against the terms of the bet...

Given the height of the OP, he would barely fit (if at all comfortably) in the 4 seat section of a 747. Absolutely no chance of comfort in a Skycouch.

MH 777s I think are still configured as 2-5-2. That middle section might cut it, but then again I'm not even sure they operate those aircraft to/from the desired destinations for our OP.

In any case, a 4-seater or 5-seater solution is only for sleeping; when upright, we have another problem.

Exit row may be the only answer (but it would still mean no flat bed for sleeping).

Good bet to win cos flying in F is great esp if you aren't paying.

Problem I see with No.2 is that I don't think that you can buy two seats in different classes on the same flight (others might have better knowledge on this than me).

Why don't you buy a J ticket and say you got upgraded from Y on all sectors. Probably easier to believe if you fly on a flight number that doesn't change from AUS - LHR ie QF31/32.

I have to say, that I think your only real option is '3' - Just do it, although I know this is not an appealing option. Unless you can argue that premium economy that some airlines offer is still economy Heck on Air Asia it's still a bed!

MH long haul has the greatest seat pitch I think - coming in at 34 inches. However, most options have compromises. The best seat pitch would be the exit rows on the sides, however the arm rests are immovable in these, so you wouldn't be able to lie across the seats.

Hmm, you've boxed yourself in a corner. Without telling your son, how about we set up the following agreement:

- You buy a ticket in Y under your name. You buy a ticket in F (or J) under my name. At the airport we check-in, and swap boarding passes. You advise the CSM or other FAs onboard that we've swapped.

Bonus points if it is on BA as you'll get recognition for your CL. Semi-bonus points on CX as you will get OW Emerald recognition.

Of course I'd have to reject any op-up chances on your ticket, and also you'd have to wander back to Y to get a photo done in the lovely Y seat.

See? Simple. But, not really a good way to impress your son if he ever found out (and I'm sure that you've given it away before that you post here etc etc)

df4 has an excellent solution which enables you to fly economy in about as much comfort as possible.

The only other solutions I can think of would be to snag one of the better economy seats on a Singapore Airlines A380 (though I have no idea how to do this!)

I'm 175cm tall and that's me in the seat trying to stretch as far as possible with my legs.

If I had taken a shot of my legs and feet, you wouldn't see the end of the legroom - just carpet.

A good spot, especially if the other seats are not occupied. It's not a flat bed of course, and we may need to stitch a couple of blankets together for our OP...

MH is the best for legroom in Y, have flown to Europe and back in 10 days in Y with the last leg in that middle seat in Y, I have heard good reports on Etihad and the good thing with Etihad is that you can use your DJ Gold status; if you have that of course.
