Student changes name by deed poll to avoid £220 Ryanair admin fee | Money | The Guardian
A student has changed his name by deed poll because it was cheaper than paying a “ridiculous” Ryanair charge for a booking error.

Adam Armstrong, 19, was presented with a £220 administration fee after his girlfriend’s stepfather mistakenly reserved a seat to Ibiza for him with the budget airline under the surname of West.

Armstrong, who is studying for a foundation degree in digital marketing at Leeds City College, changed his name to West for free and drove to Liverpool to rush through a new passport for £103.

Well, I guess that's one way to handle it...

Wouldn't he be wanting to chase his name back again? I wouldn't wanna lose my family name forever for 100gbp. Unless the deed poll can just be cancelled without fee otherwise another 103gbp makes it the same cost as having paid the change fee.

Found this :The new Adam West plans to change his name back to Adam Armstrong in seven years when his passport expires — because doing so now would cost him £103.

That is an awfully long time to go with a new name. Then have to change all the legal documents all over again?!

Not entirely the fault of the gf's stepdad given the circumstances below. The student should've done his own booking as he's got no-one else to blame but himself.

Armstrong said: “Her stepdad got my name from Facebook but I had put it as Adam West as a joke, because he was the actor who played Batman on TV.

Maybe he should have turned up at the airport in a Batman costume instead as his namesake who played Batman's alter ego Bruce Wayne in the tv series.

Afterwards he changed his name to Adam Ryanair-Sucks.

Be the last pax to board so Ryan Air have to page "passenger Ryan Air Sucks."

Just shows you how ridiculous some of these "administration" fees airlines charge.

He'll be waiting at least 10 years to change his name back based on passport expiry. A very long 10 years I'll imagine ;)

Why didn't he just buy another £25 fare? Afraid of appearing stupid in front of his prospective father-in-law?

Fares might not have been available that low given he needed to pay extra for rush passport processing. FR fares skyrocket closer to departure date

£100+ for a RyanAir airfare seems expensive.

Out of curiosity I had a look and the base fare on Stansted to Ibiza in 2 days time is £179, next Friday it is £220.

The passenger would likely be flying out of Leeds (Ryanair have a route Leeds-Ibiza), but yeah, similar prices there too at the last minute.

Adam West, isn't that the original Batman, or was it Lost in Space.

Showing my age here. Wonder if the girlfriends father is the same age as me, oh dear I'm getting old.

Matt

That is not really fair. The airline makes it clear that the fee is to discourage deliberate scams where tickets are purchased at lowest price then onsold to different pax with different names.

IMHO, from the usual limited info available:

1.- The fault here lies with the pax and the person who bought the ticket, NOT the airline.
2.- This is NOT just about a charge for "simply hitting backspace and typing a new name" as the pax infers
3.- The pax is an absolute moron.
