I'm looking at transferring points from my velocity account to my krisflyer account. I understand that there is a 1.35:1 ratio but i was wondering the following:

- are there any penalties, i.e. it costs xx_ points to transfer, or 1% of points, etc?
- how quickly do the points go across between accounts
- is there a limit to how many I can transfer in a specific time, i.e. only allowed one transfer of points per year
- are there any issues with transferring points from Krisflyer to Velocity, i.e. works the same way in both directions?

Thanks.

The 1.35:1 ratio is the penalty. Nothing more beyond that. You can transfer in both directions, but that same ratio applies both ways.

Points transfer instantly and there's no maximum. Just a minimum of 5000.

Despite the 1.35 loss, it's actually a pretty great system and can be hugely valuable.

Ah I see... that makes sense, I just thought KrisFlyer points were more 'valuable'.

For our family they are more valuable as we use Kris for international and Velocity for domestic redemptions. With Kris you can get the best seats.

I had no issues transferring 100k+ frp, Velocity to Krisflyer to purchase a J reward fare. Can't recall but points arrived in Krisflyer pretty quickly

I did approx 190,000 VA to KF for a Suites Redemption. It happened instantly and I did it while I was on the phone with the KF agent (it was a mixed J/F redemption due to no F from PER)

Don't forget that you may 'lose' points in the transfer, but you save 15% points with SQ when you book online. And as other have said, they transfer across instantly

It is the on line booking discount if you don't use the call centre. 15% off is really sweet to not call the (02) call line.

So the best strategy is earn on virgin ...gaining the 75% bonus transfer to Singapore airline ...to use

I am not sure what you mean here about a bonus transfer.. but in simple terms there it works like this

5000 VA points transferred to SQ = about 3704 KF points ( so about 74.1% )

The other discussion was about the 15% discount offered by SQ on redemptions.

Example SYD - LAX on the SQ award chart is 100,000 KF points one way ( saver ). If you were to book that flight online you would be charged 85,000 KF points ( 15% discount )

You would need to transfer 114750 VA points to get you the 85000 KF points in this example

I'm guessing the 75% is the bonus points for being SG?

Given there is often a difference in the codeshare fares, you would need to work out if spending the extra money on codeshare just for the 75% bonus points is worth it.

Just some random dates in March for MEL-SIN, on SQ it would cost $968.85 but same flight codeshare is $1282.42. Both booking into full economy, both will earn 120 SC with VA. You will earn 7504 points on the SQ ticket but 13,132 on VA tickets with the 75% status bonus.

Depending on what you value points at, this example you are paying $313.57 for 5628 points, is this good value? And ultimately when you consider the goal is transfer them to Krisflyer, transferring 13,132 will net you 9,728. Meaning you are paying an extra $313.57 for ultimately 2,224 extra points.

If you add this up over enough flights to redeem an F ticket MEL-SIN which is 127,500. It would take 17 flights on SQ and 14 flights & extra $4,396 with the VA codeshare. On random dates in March an F return is $5,620.

Value is in eye of the beholder and what type of traveling you are doing (work funded or self funded)

Remember codeshares also count towards the sectors required to retain/qualify for status, booking direct with SQ does not.

Yes, there's a 35% "penalty" on transfers, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my opinion, KrisFlyer miles are more valuable even after the penalty in many instances. Yes, you get better access to seats on SQ including First suites. You also get access to redemptions across the whole of Star Alliance.

In a couple of cases it's even better value to transfer to KF and redeem for a VA flight. Flights within Australia (except WA and NT) over 1,200 miles fall into this category.

yes absolutely the VA redemption with KF is a good one

Also, it is good to note the penalty is 25.9% not 35% on the transfer.

It depends how you look at it, I guess. I say 35% as that's the extra amount of Velocity points required for every KF point. But in essence it is 25.9% I suppose. (And even less if redeeming online for SQ with 15% discount).

yes I get you. A good point indeed

For me, when people discuss the VA to KF in terms of the points direction, I always think what the reduction on my VA points would be if transferring.
